Americana Music Auction Raises $9,000; Garth Sues Hometown Hospital; Willie Schedules Picnic for Backyard
- The Americana Music Association raised more than $9,000 on Monday by auctioning handwritten, autographed lyrics of songs from the likes of Guy Clark, Dolly Parton, and John Hiatt. In between bids, Clark, Hiatt, Cowboy Jack Clement, Elizabeth Cook, Jim Lauderdale, Kix Brooks, Sam Bush, Mary Gauthier and Jeff Black all played and sang songs. The auctioning isn’t over through, even more artists have handwritten lyrics on the block until Thursday, with Willie Nelson’s “On The Road Again” currently topping the highest bid list at $2,000.

- Garth Brooks is suing his hometown hospital for $500,000 in what he calls a breach of contract. He donated the half a million dollars four years ago and was told the money would go towards a building named after his mother who died from cancer in 1999. There’s still no building bearing her name and now he wants his money back. The hospital chalks the lawsuit up to a misunderstanding and one city council member even suggests that the city should consider removing Brooks’ name from street signs and the water tower.

Interesting as all that was, Wynonna’s obvious showstoppers left fans gasping and newcomers applauding.
Try How Great Thou Art, then Foreigner’s I Want to Know What Love Is, followed with O Come O Come Emmanuel, on the surface of an incongruous triple play but one that worked seamlessly.
Wynonna didn’t try to match the traditional stylings of well-known carols note for note, but she kept close to the spirituality and embellished with her trademark stylings.
The show was capped with O Holy Night and a heart-stopping Ave Maria in Latin.

I love Willie’s Picnic, and having it in Austin again seems to be fitting. Its always a great lineup that combines the old with the new really well. I think I have said it here before, but the last one i went to had ray price, randy rogers, billy joe shaver, jason boland, doobie brothers, bob dylan, los lonely boys, the texas playboys, james hand, jessie colter and even an odd back to back combo of janie fricke and cross canadian ragweed…good times.

Tim McGraw may have another movie role, and one that may feed his political ambitions! Tim’s been considered for the role of Vice-Emperor Joke Biten under the rulership of Emperor Nero-Odumbo (who commands the Blue State “Moron Legions”!)! The movie follows the spectacular failures of the first year of the Odumbo Empire and features Nero, Joke, the Czars of the Red Square Table, and the synchophantic court jesters known as “Congressional Democrats”. This slightly fictionalized story will be written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and is to be titled “Those Incompetent Bastards!” That’s just freakin’ awesome…

It’s comforting to know we can always turn to Rick for the latest innovations in making fun of people’s names. This from a man whose name also lends itself to abbreviation as “Dick.”

Apropos of nothing in particular, is someone around here going to review the latest Joe Nichols record sometime? Unless I missed it, the album’s been out for a couple of months now and no response from the9513 has been forthcoming.

Steve, Joe Nichols’ new record “Old Things New” came out on October 27th. I think it’s his finest work to date. It has some really great songs including the title track. I haven’t seen a review here of the album but it should definitely be listened to and purchased!

Oh, I’ve got the record and I agree it’s a big step up from his last few records. I’d just be interested in the9513 perspective.
