- Nathan Rabin on Gary Stewart’s song “Drinkin’ Thing”:
The voice boasted an almost painful intimacy and bruising intensity; it was as if this spectral croon was whispering secret thoughts into my ears. It felt like an after-midnight confession from a man just barely holding on to his sanity and fragile peace of mind. It was beautiful and heartbreaking and lonely and desperate and sad. For the next hour or so I played the song over and over again, luxuriating in its exquisite melancholy.

“The House That Built Me” is a life-changing song for me. I love it. I found it on a CD for Blake. We were listening to songs for him to cut. That song came on, and my reaction to it was, I just cried. I don’t really cry when I listen to music, but that song definitely hit me really hard. I asked Blake if I could have it, and he was like, “Yeah.” So we called the producers that night at midnight, and we were like, “Can we switch this? It’s on hold for Blake. Can we put it on hold for Miranda?”

I am truly shocked that the Holly Williams album “Here With Me” is # 3 on The Boot’s List! Its the only album on the list I own, or ever plan to own, and as much as I like it many of the songs are kinda weak. I’m still glad to see it listed though. On the other hand the inclusion of the Jimmy Wayne album completely blows the credibility of that list! Crikey! (lol)

Is one of the requirements for becoming a Board Member of the AMA being an Obamavoter? Its a shame that so much of the Americana / Alt. Country music scene is defiled by and infected with that pernicious plague known as liberalism…
The Lovell Sisters made a big impression on Vince Gill when he heard them perform on the Opry recently during his segment. Vince proclaimed the two male members of the band were among the luckiest guys on earth. Vince also told Eddie Stubbs that if they were both 20 years old again and single, Vince knew which bluegrass band they’d be members of! (lol)

Ooops, I completely forgot I won a copy of “Mountain Soul II” which is also on The Boot’s Top 10 list. I can’t say that album made much of an impression on me…

Nice to see my buddy Chris Coole get a shout-out, although Mr. Songs:Illinois seems not to know very much about him – like, for instance, that he’s been the guitarist and a lead singer with of one of Canada’s most popular indigenous bluegrass bands, the Foggy Hogtown Boys, for quite a few years; in fact, they just won both Instrumental Group and Best Overall Group honors at the Central Canada Bluegrass Awards a few days ago, and have a pretty lengthy discography.
