- Jimmie Dale Gilmore generally prefers to interpret other songwriters’ songs, but is currently working on a CD of new, original songs for release in 2008. He reveals that The Flatlanders will be working on a new project soon, too.
“I always go about the process of interpreting songs intuitively,” he said. “I don’t really have a formula or a thought-out thing. I pick a song that I like and I try to evoke the same emotion in it that it produced in me originally. It’s just a matter of feeling.”
- Rick Rubin spoke to Russell Hall about his relationship with Johnny Cash and the decisions they went through to produce what they did with American Recordings.
RH: Have you given a lot of thought to what made the relationship between you and him special, and different?
RR: I guess it was that the goals were really noble goals. We both wanted to do the best work we could, and there was very little in the way of “commercial” thoughts. It was really about the art, and about the love of great songs. My life was definitely made better by having him as my friend. He was just a beautiful man.

- More praise for Shakespeare Was a Big George Jones Fan: Cowboy Jack Clement’s Home Movies.
The hourlong Shakespeare offers only a taste, but footage such as Cash lying on A.P. Carter’s grave smoking a cigarette, Bono doing his Godfather impression, and impromptu jams with Jennings, John Prine, and Del McCoury are priceless, despite the Hee Haw-styled editing.

“Warner Brothers dropping Joanna Cotten” – just my personal opinions… I was shocked at the signing to begin with. She’s a talented writer, good singer, but, and this could have led to the eventual ‘drop’, weight issues are weight issues. Not that SHE has an issue with her weight, but welcome to Nashville. I personally wasn’t sold on her as an artists, but I do think she’s a fantastic songwriter and will have a great career doing that if she chooses.
Whitney on the other hand, goodlooking, blonde, sings, no weight at all… there ya go. With the information I’ve heard about Scott Hendricks running WB now, I’m not surprised – after all, Whitney COULD BE another Faith.
Angela isn’t a pretty girl, in the sense we’ve become accustomed to looking at as a ’star’ – sorry.
I realise this all sounds horrible coming from a guy, but it is what it is – honest.

It’s good to see John Prine (with Mac Wiseman) on the Top 100 list. Even though this recording doesn’t feature any of Prine’s brilliant song-writing ability, it’s nice as a couple of old classic guys doing a decent job with some classic songs and having fun at the same time. I’m listening to it right now, in fact (and smiling).
