“All The Good Stories Have Already Been Taken”

  • The Esquire feature “What I’ve Learned” with Merle Haggard is up online and as expected from a man who has lived as long as Haggard, he has some good stories and a few insightful things to say.

I think what we’re lacking in music today is it seems like all the good stories have been already taken. “Stardust” has already been written. “Your Cheatin’ Heart.” “Imagine.” God almighty, lightning may never strike again like that.

If only somebody could come up with something different — start a new trend. Real music. If only somebody could sing a song, had something to say, had a good melody, and could do it in person, without help from any electronics. I think the people would go nuts. It’s bound to happen. There’s got to be a guy out there somewhere. A natural.

  • Turns out that the Little Big Town download that we posted about yesterday isn’t entirely free–they want your soul in exchange…or you can just sign up for their newsletter. The promo ends tonight at 12am.
  • Chet Flippo takes a look at new music from The Eagles, John Fogerty, Garth Brooks, and Steve Earle in his weekly Nashville Skyline column, and is enthusiastic about what he hears.
  • If you’ve got 15 minutes or so to waste, I’d highly recommend watching the YouTube videos posted over at Take Country Back. The first video features all the Highwaymen at one time or another, but focuses mainly on the interaction between Johnny Cash, Gene Autry, and Willie Nelson and perfectly captures their offstage candor.
  • The 50 Cent vs. Kanye West vs. Kenny Chesney story is beginning to take on a life of its own. Comedic filmmakers Jeff and Eric even turned the story into a short video and posted it for the world to see on The Real. Here’s what they have to say:

We just posted a new sketch, which sorts out what purports to be a Hip Hop Holiday: the day that Kanye West and 50 Cent release their albums… problem is, they’ve forgotten about one of the most powerful forces in music today: Kenny Chesney!

Does the magazine contain any material on the Haggard feature that isn’t online?
