Album Review: Jason Aldean – Wide Open
Recycling is a great thing. It doesn’t take much energy or time to just toss a bottle or can into an appropriate receptacle, and in doing so you can rest easy knowing that you’ve helped to make to world a better place.
Unfortunately, the same doesn’t apply to music.
While we don’t know if Jason Aldean has gone green, he’s proven to be a musical recycler of the highest order on his latest release Wide Open (April 7). Chock-full of tired themes and familiar metaphors, Aldean even goes so far as to rip the title track off an old Andy Griggs album (“This I Gotta See”) and copycat the lyrics of Chris Cagle’s “Anywhere But Here” on “Truth” (co-written by Brett James and Ashley Monroe).
Aside from that, Wide Open touches on highways, a struggling diner waitress, country girls, Nashville and tractors.
It’s true, of course, that with the current state of Nashville this conglomeration of clichés feels not at all out of the ordinary, and Aldean does a solid job tackling some of the material while (more often than not) faltering elsewhere.
Title track “Wide Open” is a grossly peachy lyric, showing us a young lady that is “Flippin’ eggs and bacon/With a college education.” She’s still young and the world is wide open; the opportunities, the song proclaims, are endless. College-educated waitresses are a reality in this country, but with unemployment rates skyrocketing, references to “endless opportunities” ring hollow and unrealistic, too optimistic to resonate in a time when many would love to have the “opportunity” to flip eggs.
Where “Wide Open” fails, “Fast” succeeds. Even though the hook (“Hey, aren’t those four lanes fast”) is a bit bland, the rest of the song copes with the difficulty of surviving in an ever-changing world. In particular, Aldean examines a farmer who is bidding farewell to his way of life—perhaps failing to make it since the economic downturn. Aldean does a nice job here vocally, and the song gets to the heart of the matter in a stark, real and relevant way. In general, agrarian songs, like the hit “Amarillo Sky,” are a good fit for Aldean, and even on the somewhat amateur-sounding “Big Green Tractor” Aldean manages to create a fun musical atmosphere.
In terms of production, Wide Open is essentially what we’ve come to expect from Aldean. He’s built a brand on a certain country-rock, radio-friendly sound and this album cashes in on it–though it’s important to note that there are an overwhelming number of slow to and mid-tempo songs on the disc. Aside from the awful “She’s Country,” and “Crazy Town” (a strange back-handed ode to Nashville) there isn’t much heavy pulsation—which would be a good thing if the slower tunes weren’t so disposable. “Don’t Give Up On Me,” “Love Was Easy” and “Keep the Girl,” (along with the aforementioned “This I Gotta See” and “Truth”) don’t bring anything new or risky to the table.
Aldean has solid potential but simply resorts to singing generic material. Wide Open isn’t hard on the ears, and sonically it serves as great good background music. But there is nothing nothing remarkable or memorable here.
If only I had a dime for all the artists in Nashville that those same characteristics apply to.

right on, dude…
I wish someone would write an article about the way songs are written for videos now, instead of the other way around.
March 23, 2009 at 5:06 pm Permalink
I agree about the background music comment. It’s got some good production, and I really like Aldean’s voice on most songs… but if you sit down and listen carefully to the lyrics, which is the essence of country music, it just doesn’t pass the test.

Oh, and “She’s Country” is definitely the worst track on the album. I mean that song is flat-out awful, to be honest. Have you ever heard lines as bad as “a bad mama-jama”, “hunny drippin’ hunny”, or “gets ya flippin kinda trippy like a Mississippi hippy”… just wow.
So I wouldn’t necessarily use that single as your measuring stick for whether to listen to it/buy it or not, since the majority of the album is pretty consistent with his last two albums.

I wish The 9513 would have a giveaway contest for this album, and Eric Church’s too for that matter. I’ve run out of targets for shooting practice and think these two CDs would work perfectly after I draw a couple of bullseyes on the CD sleeves…..

USA Today had run an article stating Jason was including a duet with Randy Owen on a remake of “My Home’s In Alabama”. Is there a story behind why it didn’t make the CD?

Hey Chris,
They had a show on GAC last week with Jason Aldean and Randy Owen doing a sit down talk for a hour and it showed them recording the song !….That is weird if it isn’t on the CD ?
Maybe it will be a extra track at some selected store or something ??
March 23, 2009 at 10:41 pm Permalink
Hey Dale! Do you remember the name of the show on GAC? I would love to check that out.
March 23, 2009 at 10:52 pm Permalink
It’s called “One to One”. According to GAC’s website, it airs:

Thanks, Drew. It does seem weird. The article was solely about how excited he was about the song and how Randy agreed to the duet.

The worst singer I’ve ever seen
Was some short guy named Jason Aldean
In a cowboy hat
Man, I laughed at that
The little dude thought he could sing
Sporting a couple of ladies earrings
Looking like some brat
With a voice so flat
Oh, man, he was willing
But my ears, he was killing
The Chesney legacy has no pride
I laughed until I cried

Guy,
Now that is funny. I have yet to be convinced this guy is nothing more than a really bad karaoke singer. Saw him live last year and that was just plain painful. A bunch of rock posers trying to be country but can’t play either one. Sad that acts like this actually see the light of day.

I fully agree with this review – Jason Aldean cannot sing, and his songs aren’t interesting enough to make up for that fact
March 28, 2009 at 9:36 am Permalink
Wow, rough crowd. I can’t wait for the album to come out! Especially for ” She’s Country!” I love the beat – it’s fun. Why does everything always have to fit into a musical class of rock or country or whatever? Why can’t it just be enjoyed for whatever it is? Lyrics don’t always have to be poetry – how bout just “fun”!?

Jason aldean can sing, and “She’s Country” is a great song. He is a hell of a lot better then taylor swift or carrie underwood. If anyone has a problem with my comment I really don’t care.

I love Jason Aldean! I also love “She’s Country!” I think you haters need to turn your energy into something more positive than trying to tear down a sweet country boy from GA.
Oh and for the poet Guy…. the “little dude” Jason is 6 feet tall! Puhleez don’t try to compare him to Chesney’s stature.

I love Jason’s music and can’t wait for April 7th so that I can buy it. I have been to lots of concerts and have to say that his show is awesome. He keeps the crowd involved. Aside from Jason and his sexy singing voice, his drummer, Rich Redmond…one of the greatest drummers I have ever seen or heard. This is why I love America. Every person can say what they want. Like my dad always says…”Opinions are like assholes…everybody has one” and some of yours really stink!
April 5, 2009 at 10:25 pm Permalink
The essence of country music is it’s lyrics. Really? Interesting. Would you care to back that up behind such stellar hits as “She Thinks My Tractor Is Sexy” or “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy”? The real essence of country music is the fact that it translates to the common person. Real stories for real people. And sometimes real people like to be real fun. I’m not making that up. Honest truth. Not everyone has to break down and change the world in each song. If that’s what blows your mind, then please remove the Jason Aldean CD and insert some Cold Play…….now. But most of us have enough seriousness to deal with day to day, it is nice to sing along about the “party all nighter in North Carolina”.
All music doesn’t have to be Shakespearean poetry to be catchy or have value or a place in the music world. It just has to appeal to the listeners. With several platinum albums under his belt I would say Jason Aldean is appealing to people in a big way. The proof is in the platinum boys.
The can not sing comment I won’t touch. I will simply say there are many singers voices I can not listen to. They can sing. It just isn’t my style to listen to. I wouldn’t insult them or their craft by suggesting my picky ears means that suddenly a double platinum selling artist can not sing. Some people always think they have more knowledge than millions of fan, record company exec’s and recording industry giants. That’s a mighty big bowl of Wheaties I need to eat to get that big for my britches.
I’m just sayin’…
April 6, 2009 at 5:34 pm Permalink
Fans who purchase the disc at Wal-Mart will also be treated to a special bonus track, a collaboration with one of Aldean’s musical heroes Randy Owen on Alabama’s hit “My Home’s In Alabama.” Additionally, iTunes will offer a bonus track titled “The Best Of Me” to digital shoppers.

Personally, I like this new album, it is the first Aldean CD that I have purchased. I do like his rocky sort-of edge he puts on the music… he may be “radio – friendly” but at least he does have a distinct sound to separate him from the rest of the crowd.
I do think that “the9513″ does tend to have a unique view on country music. I also think that their reviews tend to be favored towards “folksy” and “Americana/Roots” sounding music… I think it is a little bit of a rough crowd.
April 15, 2009 at 9:31 am Permalink
The best written song on the album is the bonus track “Best of Me”. It was written by a kid from North Georgia, Brantley Gilbert. I suggest looking him up and give his version a listen!!! Very gifted singer/song writer on the verge of breaking out.

There’s a line in Eric Church’s “Lotta Boot Left to Fill” from the new Carolina album that refers to our dear friend Jason. “You sing about Johnny Cash, but the man in black would have whipped your ass.” Fact. “Wide Open” is what makes me cringe about country music today. Jason Aldean doesn’t even write his own music (but at least he can play the guitar…cough Tim McGraw), so you’d think he would choose songs that weren’t identical to every other track released on his previous two albums.
April 21, 2009 at 8:43 am Permalink
I LOVE THIS ALBUM!! Matter of fact I love Jason Aldean and I think he can sing. I just recently saw him in concert and he puts on 1 hell of a concert! He is awesome and so is his music. He is a heck of alot better then some of these other singers that everyone gives praise to!! I believe Jason Aldean is going to go far now! I have all his albums and this is the best yet! Shes country is headed up the charts and if his album is so bad then why is he sitting at #2 on the album county chart!! And if it wasn’t for Rascal Flatts releasing their album at the same time he would be sitting at #1!! I LOVE JASON ALDEAN!! GO JASON!!

I’m like to start by telling everyone how honored I am to be conversating among such great songwriters, musicians, singers, and know-it-all’s. One would only assume that the comments coming from you folks and 9513 would be out of ignorance, seeing how Jason Aldean is one of Nashville’s biggest cash cows right now. How do you argue with double platinum? The guy works hard on his craft, only to be criticized by folks, such as yourselfs, who haven’t the first clue about being a country music artist. So what if he doesn’t write his own music, George Strait doesn’t write his own songs either. Are you guys so arrogant, that you’ll argue with 54 #1 hits? You gonna call George Strait a failure? Rest my case… I guess my question is who are ANY of you to criticize Jason Aldean? If you have enough guts to call out an artist of this caliber, why don’t I know any of your names?

I actually like Jason Alean, so I’m sure my opinion will not hold much value around here. “Fast” is easily the best song on this CD and is one of the best ones he’s ever recorded. “Don’t Give Up On Me’ and “Truth” may have recycled themes, but they are still good songs and Jason performs them well. And “She’s Country” and “Big Green Tractors” are just fun songs with catchy choruses designed to sell, which they do well. Overall, I give “Wide Open” a thumbs up. But if polished country music isn’t your thing, then I could see why you wouldn’t like it.
July 16, 2009 at 4:06 pm Permalink
I understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinion when it comes to the music they like, but when you guys make up stuff just to put Jason Aldean down its down right sad. He clearly would not be popular enough to have three solid records out and able to bring out huge crowds to his shows if his voice is so “terrible” and his songs are so “plain, boring and predictable.” His songs have greatly changed my life, so for all of you that are saying they are weak and just like any other song on country radio today, you need to spend your time doing something else. If you don’t like him and his music that’s fine, but why would you bother to waste your time to criticize someone’s career and talents by writing an article or responding and complaining about how bad he is? Get a life. I have also seen Jason twice in concert and can say he was absolutely amazing. He has energy like all the superstars and his voice and band sounds even better live. I also saw Keith Urban and Taylor Swift one week after seeing Jason Aldean at a county fair and can easily say that Jason Aldean kicked both of their asses combined. He’s a great singer and entertainer, and I believe his songs are among the best in Nashville today. I am also a huge Eric Church fan, and believe if you don’t like his songs, then you shouldn’t be listening to country music in the first place.

Jason aldean mite have some songs that hit the top of the charts but im not too impressed with him. Eric Church is way the fuck better, every song off sinners like me is a hit too me, theres a song for every mood and he says everything soo true, unlike Aldean who just plays some shit that dosent go together, and Eric Churchs new CD is the same way as his old one, every song is a hit, and if you havent heard “still gotta lot of boot left to fill” then u should. Eric church gives respect where it is due, and if johnny cash where around today i bet he’d rather due a song with Mr. Church then some wannabe like Aldean

I think Church and Aldean are both good. She’s country was a disgrace to music, but there are several good songs on this album, most notably “On My Highway”.
