ACM Win Boosts Sales For Jamey Johnson
- Sales for Jamey Johnson’s album That Lonesome song jumped 60 percent since he won the ACM Song of the Year for “In Color.” Commenting on plans for the future, Johnson says he hopes to have a new album in the fall or early winter and has contributed songs to George Strait for consideration on his next album.

- Watch Chuck Mead (MySpace) and his gang of moped followers zip around in the video for “I Wish It Was Friday.” Mead, the co-founder of the former band BR549 will release a new album, Journeyman’s Wager, on May 12.
- Craig Shelburne excitedly recommends that you pick up two of George Jone’s early albums–A Picture of Me (Without You) and Nothing Every Hurt Me (Half as Bad as Losing You). They’re both being re-released April 21 on one CD.
- Austin360 spotlighted several bands that will be performing at the Old Settler’s Music Festival this week: the Lee Boys, Travelin’ McCourys and The Greencards.
- The Greencards (MySpace) will release Fascination, their Sugar Hill debut and overall fourth studio album, on April 21. Melodic Sunburst has free downloads for two of the songs: “Chico Calling” and “Three Four Time.”
- Paste’s Muriel Vega published an interview with Sara Watkins on the subject of her new, self-titled solo album.
- If country music has taught us anything, it’s that lonely guys in empty houses aren’t as uncommon as they might seem and neither are songs about them. Based on those songs, Country California’s C.M. Wilcox concludes that lonely guys in empty houses are not particularly sane, they’re big on prison metaphors and sometimes exhibit destructive behavior. Totally awesome playlist.
- Rolling Stone described the sound and gave the back story to five bands who they feel are paying tribute to, while updating the style of, bluegrass music: O’ Death, Avett Brothers, Uncle Earl, Those Darlins and Old Crow Medicine Show.
- Meanwhile, The Bluegrass Blog polled its readers to find out whether they think Rolling Stone knows its bluegrass or not. Of the 432 readers who have currently voted, 93 percent said no.
- If you’re looking for a straight-up party album, Twangville’s Shawn Underwood recommends Dopers, Drunks and Everyday Losers, the first studio album from Commander Cody in 20 years.
- PopMatters’ Jayson Harsin reviewed Country Club, the new album from John Doe and the Sadies (MySpace), which features covers of “Husbands and Wives,” “Fool Such As I,” “Are the Good Times Really Over For Good” and more.
- Stumble over to Groover’s Paradise, a music blog where contributors post daily music samples from their favorite 20th Century rock, country, and soul music. After a quick scroll through the recent posts, I saw songs from Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and discovered Doug Sahm’s killer cover of the Harlan Howard classic “The Image of Me.” (via Big Rock Candy Mountain)

Glad to hear anything good happening for Jamey Johnson…and especially to hear about the potential for new music!

Jamey Johnson’s music appeals to anyone who liked the Waylon Jennings style outlaw music era. All they have to do is become aware of it, and since those types of people mostly don’t listen to AirHead Top 40 country radio its a tough row to hoe…
Off Topic: Joey + Rory will be performing in Los Angeles on next Wednesday night April 22 at the Largo Coronet Theater. Its a 280 seat venue and tickets cost $ 20. I’m really looking forward to this and hope they leave the canned backing music out of this performance (unlike in St. Joe, Missouri).

(PS – Who in the hell is Eddie Izzard?)
Also: 1100 Springs and David Serby will be performing at The Redwood Bar in Downtown LA this Sunday afternoon with the Americana Brunch starting at 11 AM. 1100 Springs always puts on a great live show, so I’m really looking forward to this one!

Northy, I almost love tweaking Carrie Underwood fans as much as I love tweaking Obama Voters! The bigger the “Rick Smack” reaction I get the better! Its easier than using a Desert Eagle .44 pistol to shoot endangered fish species in a rainforest hardwood barrel…

Rick’s Random TidBits: The ACM Awards Show had a real impact on country album sales beyond just Jamey Johnson. Here’s some info from AllAboutCountry.com:
“Over 1-Million COUNTRY Albums Sold Last Week!
Big Debuts And The ACM’s Responsible For Best Sales Week Of 2009.
For the first time in many years, it took sales of over 17,000 units to make it into the Nielsen Soundscan COUNTRY Top 10. Here’s another article sure to gladden the hearts of many 9513 stalwarts. (Ok, I’m being snarky again…):
“Dan Huff Has A ‘Hot Hand’ In COUNTRY Album Sales.
Dan Produces 3 #1 Albums In 3-Weeks!
Nashville Producer Dan Huff appears to have the “hot hand” when it comes to producing the best-selling COUNTRY albums. In the past 3-weeks, each of the top debuting albums were produced by Dan: Rascal Flatts/Unstoppable, Keith Urban/Defying Gravity, and Martina McBride/Shine”.
Rick’s comment: Dan is making my music choices much easier these days! I just avoid wasting time or money on anything he’s had a hand in producing….
April 16, 2009 at 8:12 pm Permalink
Rick: You didn’t know that about Dan already?

Is Dan Huff also a songwriter as well as producer? Because there’s a Dan Huff on the bill at the Bluebird next Saturday night with Lari White.

Martina’s album is falling like an anvil. She debuted at #1, dropped to #7 last week and is down to #16 this week.

Razor, she just had one hit out of that album thus far and her ready fans gobbled her album up the first week. The majority of us with tight fisted economic blues cash are just waiting to see what else comes out of the album before buying.
I imagine some of those current ACM album buyers were some of those waiting to see people too.

I just wish he’d turn the darn record over. It’s getting tiresome. Imagine if one of us repeated the same tired Obama-this/Airhead Radio-that everytime we logged in.
