The 2008 International Bluegrass Music Awards were passed out tonight as the bluegrass community descended upon the Ryman in Nashville, TN to find out who this year’s recipients would be. The show was hosted by Del McCoury, but the big winner of the night was the new group Dailey & Vincent. They wrested the Vocal Group award from Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver who have had a stranglehold on it for the past 7 years and featured Jamie Dailey as vocalist before he set off with Darrin Vincent to release their self-titled debut album earlier this year. The new group picked up several other awards, including Gospel Recorded Performance–another category largely dominated by Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver over the past 7 years–for their recording of “By The Mark.” It was the first time this decade that Lawson’s group has been shut out at the bluegrass awards. Dailey also picked up the Male Vocalist award and Dale Ann Bradley repeated her 2007 win as Female Vocalist. Noted for his high pitched vocal, if it were up to Dailey, that last award would be his, too. In an article on CMT, he’s quoted as saying, “whoever wins the female vocalist of the year award, I’m going up there and take it away from her.” The other winners are designated in bold below.

I picked Dailey & Vincent’s album up last week and after listening to it non-stop, I have to agree with all of their wins. They are fantastic and VERY deserving. Way to go guys!

The moral: If you have a baby boy this year, do him a favor and name him Dailey or Vincent, or even Dailey Vincent. He’ll thank you later.

I like that the IBMA gives awards for Graphic Design and Liner Notes.
I guess this means I should finally get around to checking out Dailey & Vincent.

Dailey & Vincent deserve every award they won, with the possible exception of entertainer of the year. I suspect that they would’ve won song of the year if they hadn’t been nominated twice in that category. I predicted when the nominations came out that the D&V vote would be split and The Steeldrivers would take it. Instead, the voting in this category was hopelessly muddled and Blue Highway was the rather undeserving winner.
