43rd Annual ACM Awards: Who Should Have Been Nominated

In a perfect world, The 9513 staff would select the ACM nominees and fans would not vote for Entertainer of the Year. Here in the real world, the Academy votes for the nominees, the fans vote for the Entertainer, and I make fun of both.
There are only two rules: as much as I’d like to, I didn’t change the eligibility rules for each category (e.g., no Jennifer Nettles for Top Female Vocalist). Second, I nominated only artists who I thought had a chance, however small, of actually receiving an ACM nomination.
Nominees who should win are bolded.
Entertainer of the Year
- Tim McGraw & Faith Hill
- Rascal Flatts
- Brad Paisley
- George Strait
- Keith Urban
Beyond Rascal Flatts and Brad Paisley, no artist really put things together both on the radio and on the road in the past year. However, Tim and Faith deserve mention for the second consecutive installment of the record-setting Soul2Soul tour and Strait continued his remarkable run of radio hits. The final spot was a tossup between Urban and Kenny Chesney, and both have been major touring acts for long enough that their mega-shows aren’t making any waves. I give the nod to Urban, who doesn’t make country music anymore but is still releasing some of the best songs of his career while Chesney’s best material is far behind him. Paisley, who recently graduated to arena shows and had a very successful year at radio, gets the win.
Top Male Vocalist
- Brad Paisley
- George Strait
- Keith Urban
- Vince Gill
- Josh Turner
Sorry, in any category where “vocalist” is not preceded by “worst,” Kenny Chesney is ineligible. Making a four-CD display of vocal versatility that was nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammys ought to be sufficient to earn Gill a nomination in this category, but Turner’s bass voice wins for a remarkable third album and an up-tempo radio hit.
Top Female Vocalist
- Miranda Lambert
- Martina McBride
- LeAnn Rimes
- Carrie Underwood
- Trisha Yearwood
Like Chesney, Taylor Swift simply isn’t a good enough vocalist to deserve nomination in this category despite her success. I replace her with Trisha Yearwood, who ought to win the award. LeAnn Rimes takes second for discovering the remarkably bluesy voice that she should have been using all along.
Top Vocal Group
- Alison Krauss and Union Station
- Eagles
- Emerson Drive
- Little Big Town
- Rascal Flatts
Both the CMAs and ACMs need to merge the Top Vocal Group and Top Vocal Duo categories. The fact that the ACMs also have a Top New Duo or Vocal Group category makes for an abundance of mediocre nominees. I honestly can’t think of a fifth group that even comes close to deserving nomination (and apparently the Academy couldn’t either: seriously, Diamond Rio?) so I’ll go with AKUS, an ACM and CMA favorite for a token nominee that has no chance of winning but makes it look like voters actually do care about musical integrity.
Top Vocal Duo
- Big & Rich
- Brooks & Dunn
- Montgomery Gentry
- Sugarland
- Tim McGraw & Faith Hill
If Johnny and June can win awards like this, why can’t Tim & Faith be nominated? They deserve nomination for “I Need You” alone, but “Stay” makes Sugarland the winner.
Top New Male Vocalist
- Luke Bryan
- Eric Church
- Bucky Covington
As much as I despise Bucky Covington, he does have two modest hits, which is more than any other nominee can claim. Eric Church has released two boring singles (”How ‘Bout You,” “Guys Like Me”), two very strong singles (”Two Pink Lines,” “Sinners Like Me”) and one good video (”Lightning”), and that’s enough to make him my winner.
Top New Female Vocalist
- Lori McKenna
- Kellie Pickler
- Taylor Swift
Seriously, how could you overlook McKenna in favor of Sarah Buxton? Both are quality artists, but McKenna made a sensational debut album and appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, and that’s more exposure than Buxton can ever hope to receive. However, I don’t think there’s any doubt that Swift will win this and she ought to.
Top New Duo or Vocal Group
- Eagles
- Lady Antebellum
- Whiskey Falls
I’m not sure how the Academy managed to nominate Halfway to Hazard for Top Vocal Duo but not for Top New Vocal Duo: that and the fact that one Top “New” Duo nominee has already broken up (The Wreckers) just reveals how silly these categories are. Since this is the Eagles’ first official foray into country radio, shouldn’t they be nominated?
Album of the Year
- Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Miranda Lambert
- Everything is Fine, Josh Turner
- Heaven, Heartache, and the Power of Love, Trisha Yearwood
- Family, LeAnn Rimes
- Unglamorous, Lori McKenna
The inclusion of Kenny Chesney’s album and the exclusion of the Yearwood and Turner’s latest efforts pretty much suck all legitimacy out of this year’s nominees. I’d like to see Wagonmaster nominated but couldn’t suspend disbelief long enough to imagine that happening, so LeAnn Rimes takes the final spot on my list. Yearwood is the hands-down winner.
Single Record of the Year
- “Stay”, Sugarland
- “Close Up the Honkytonks,” Dwight Yoakam
- “Moments,” Emerson Drive
- “If You’re Reading This,” Tim McGraw
- “Nothin’ Better to Do,” LeAnn Rimes
At least the Academy managed to nominate “Stay,” the song that should and will win. However, I’m not sure how they managed to overlook Rimes’ smash and a great song that debuted on their own broadcast. Yoakam has gotten a lot more love from the ACMs than the CMAs so I can imagine him being in the mix for his courageous Buck Owens cover.
Song of the Year
- “Stay,” Jennifer Nettles (Sugarland)
- “Moments,” Dave Berg, Annie Tate, Sam Tate (Emerson Drive)
- “Nothin’ Better to Do,” Darrell Brown, Dean Sheremet, LeAnn Rimes (LeAnn Rimes)
- “I Need You,” Tony Lane, David Lee (Tim McGraw & Faith Hill)
- “Stupid Boy,” Dave Berg, Deanna Bryant, Sarah Buxton (Keith Urban)
It wasn’t a great year for the writers. I’d give the award to Nettles’ cheatin’ song.
Video of the Year
- “Online,” Brad Paisley
- “Stay,” Sugarland
- “Close Up the Honkytonks,” Dwight Yoakam
- “Lightning,” Eric Church
- “Nothin’ Better to Do,” LeAnn Rimes
There, now isn’t that better? Rimes wins by a hair for fulfilling one of my greatest fantasies.
Vocal Event of the Year
- “Because of You,” Reba McEntire with Kelly Clarkson
- “Find Out Who Your Friends Are,” Tracy Lawrence with Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney
- “I Need You,” Tim McGraw & Faith Hill
- “Another Try,” Josh Turner with Trisha Yearwood
- “What You Give Away,” Vince Gill with Sheryl Crowe
I suppose it’s hard to argue that McGraw and Hill singing together is a vocal event, but it’s better than near everything else that could be nominated. I give the award to Gill and Turner and Yearwood finish a close second.

“Since this is the Eagles’ first official foray into country radio, shouldn’t they be nominated?”
I’m afraid I must demur. The Eagles got a Vocal Group nomination in 1975, and “Lyin’ Eyes” was a Top 10 country hit the same year.

To bad Porter didn’t get a nod for Wagonmaster:Album of the Year.
or Single and Video for “Commited To Parkview”

You demurrer!
I’m still trying to figure out what the eligibility requirements are, specifically, what is the date range and do you just need to release a single or what?

I so agree with you about LeAnn Rimes song and video!! I loved them both! GREAT WORK! I also hope STAY wins!

I’m here to help:
TOP NEW DUO OR VOCAL GROUP
This award is presented to an outstanding duo featuring a vocalist or group featuring a vocalist (herein called “duo or group”) in the country music industry who gains either initial fame or significantly greater recognition through their efforts during the preceding calendar year. The duo or group must have charted a single in the Top
30 on Billboard/Radio & Records (BDS) or Country Aircheck (Mediabase) Country Airplay charts; and/or sold 100,000 album units reflected in Sound Scan during the qualifying period. The nominees shall be determined by a nomination ballot(s) and are subject to the approval of the board. The winner shall be determined by a vote of the membership of the ACM.
A duo or group may be a nominee in this category for two consecutive years. If they are a winner in this category their first year on the ballot, they will not be eligible in this category for a second year.

What about Dierks Bentley?! I’m sorry, but a man who does 325 shows a year, puts out quality music, gets 4 grammy nominations, and LOVES his fans definitely deserves a nod somewhere!
March 5, 2008 at 11:11 am Permalink
Take off Eric Church, who has been around for a century, and put on Lee Brice, who has had two very unique singles (and wrote possibly the biggest song of the year). Not giving him a New Male nod is stupid. But no worries–apparently you have ten years of eligibility in that category.
March 5, 2008 at 11:14 am Permalink
yeah, evidently “new” means, that the artist is just new to the mini-van soccer mom in middle america…
March 5, 2008 at 11:33 am Permalink
I second the Dierks Bentley comment. He had a quality year, and Long Trip Alone is a song that he put out that didn’t garner his usual radio success but was a great song. Also, Eric Church, has one album and four singles, with his next album coming out in August. Not quite a century. I love Lee Brice, but he hasn’t even had a cd put out yet (although I hope it comes out soon!)

Chris: But the Eagles didn’t hit the charts again until 2007. If I’m reading the rules right, they’re still eligbile and lots of artists have been nominated for this award after one top 10 hit. The Eagles have never really gone for country spins until last year so I’d call them a new artist.
Jim: I considered Lee Brice when putting together this list only because you mentioned him yesterday. I don’t think he deserves it. A song written for another artist is not a qualification for a Top New Vocalist award. His singles haven’t done much on the charts and I don’t think generally that artists who haven’t released an album ought to be nominated for Top New Artist award (I nominated Lady Antebellum only because of the dearth of deserving nominees for that category).
March 5, 2008 at 2:40 pm Permalink
Matt: I can see that, but I’m thinking the degree of difference between public recognition of the Eagles now and a year ago (”significantly greater recognition through their efforts during the preceding calendar year”) wouldn’t necessarily be that huge. Are the Eagles really more famous than they were at the beginning of 2007?
March 5, 2008 at 4:03 pm Permalink
Huh, I’m not the Heidi that posted above but I wholeheartedly agree with what she said :)
This list is MUCH more believable BUT I still find it someone predictable in a 9513 kind of way. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind Trisha or Josh but you guys (collective) have given them HUGE props here that I’m not sure everyone would agree with.
Good reasoning on most of the categories though.
March 5, 2008 at 4:49 pm Permalink
Heidi, I think Dierks Bentley is deserving of any recognition he gets. I’d probably place him ahead of three guys on the list above, but competition is pretty stiff in that category and Dierks didn’t really have a high profile last year other than his touring. That’s one of the reasons I was asking what the criteria was.
Trisha Yearwood should win Female Vocalist based solely on the album, but factoring in the other criteria, I’m not sure she’d be my top choice, either. I don’t think it can be denied that she is deserving of a nomination, though.
I think anyone that puts out some of the best music over the course of a year is going to appear to be getting huge props and I don’t see why they don’t deserve them. That being said, I don’t think we as a collective have given them an over abundance of credit. Ben’s review of “Another Try” that features them both was thumbs down (although I thought it was great, but Ben presented a logical argument) and Matt’s review of Josh Turner’s Live At the Ryman only gave it two stars.
March 5, 2008 at 6:56 pm Permalink
which three would you put dierks bentley over??
March 5, 2008 at 8:01 pm Permalink
If he would have had a higher profile, then I’d probably place him ahead of the first three and even ahead of Turner. As it is, I think Turner is more deserving and like Matt’s picks for the category, although I’ve never gotten into Urban’s music.

I mostly view award shows with some detachment. None of these groups (ACM, CMA, NARAS) have ever nominated Dale Watson, Justin Trevino or Amber Digby for anything and Watson, Trevino and Digby positively smoke the vocal talents of anyone nominated above
This year’s top vocal group category is positively pathetic. You have
1) a bluegrass group that did not issue any new material this year (AKUS)
2) an ancient country wanna-be rock band that wasn’t very good even in their heyday (Eagles)
3) a very mediocre group that had a surprise hit off a very mediocre album (Emerson Drive)
4) more rock than country band (Little Big Town)
5) the blandest band ever (Rascal Flatts)
The other categories all look Herculean by comparison
March 5, 2008 at 8:34 pm Permalink
Paul, I enjoy Dale Watson quite a bit, but I think it’s a stretch to say his vocals smoke anyone else’s on the list. I have some of Trevino’s stuff, but haven’t given it much of a listen yet. I could live with Digby being on the list and think it would be good for country music if she were nominated.
March 5, 2008 at 8:50 pm Permalink
Isn’t calling the Eagles a “new artist” the same as when a Japanese star comes to America to play baseball and is considered a rookie.
March 6, 2008 at 12:06 am Permalink
Paul: To be clear, AKUS is only on my vocal group list of nominees; Halfway to Hazard replaces them on the official list. I agree that the category is weak, but that’s because it shouldn’t exist in the first place.
Re: Amber Digby, I really like her stuff but I think that you overrate her. Her voice is not nearly the equal of the songs that she records and the excellent arrangements that she sings to. I say that her voice is inferior to each of the five artists that I nominated in the female vocalist category.
March 6, 2008 at 12:37 am Permalink
Correction: AKUS was replaced by Diamond Rio. Halfway to Hazard received a nomination for the real Top Vocal Duo category.
March 6, 2008 at 10:55 am Permalink
Why do you not like Bucky Covington? He has a great voice, awesome personality, and adores his fans and what he does for a living. He may of started off on American Idol but he sure is out touring hard and has started to make a name for himself. I think people forget that Carrie Underwood was also on American Idol and look at her great career. Given a chance, Bucky would win Best New Male Artist!
March 7, 2008 at 12:25 am Permalink
Kerri, everything you listed as a positive for Bucky is subjective (although most things discussed on here are!). However, I just saw a concert with Luke Bryan, Bucky Covington, and Dierks Bentley. While I did not mind Bucky’s set, he certainly was not country. I do like his voice, but his choice of a strait-laced cover of “Another Brick In The Wall” was definitely odd in a specifically country concert. Luke Bryan blew him out of the water even though he was the first to take the stage. Dierks was fantastic as usual.
March 7, 2008 at 5:54 am Permalink
Gary Allan still doesn’t get enough props. Blake Shelton is a fantastic vocalist. And can someone tell me why Craig Morgan doesn’ t get more recognition? “Tough” would have sounded like any other cancer song done by a lesser singer. When he sings it, I believe him.
I have to say, Bucky Covington is only semi-listenable as a studio creation. I fell across part of a concert he did with Sawyer Brown on DIRECTV. I felt embarrassed for Sawyer Brown. Bucky was horrible. I used to call him mushmouth on American Idol. I’ve since added tone-deaf to that description.
March 7, 2008 at 8:28 am Permalink
Ouch, Bucky got burned. I didn’t think of Gary Allan (I guess I’m being conditioned to only think of the viable candidates), but he’s definitely deserving and so is Shelton, it just goes to show how tough the competition is in that category.
March 7, 2008 at 1:05 pm Permalink
what about ashton shepherd for new female vocalist?? i love sarah buxton, but taking off this pain is already a bigger hit than anything sarah has done and she has a cd out now (although that probably wasnt considered since it came out after the eligebility period) but i would have picked her over sarah
March 29, 2008 at 7:38 am Permalink
Hmmmm Jim….why do you say that Eric Church has been around for a century? His first CD came out July of 06…..and he’s had no nominations…he’s a FANTASTIC artist.
March 29, 2008 at 11:57 am Permalink
I wrote about Church in the Belmont Vision in 2006 (March)…so he’s been a major label, radio viable artist since at least that point. Maybe that’s not a century, but I still don’t consider him a new artist.
May 17, 2008 at 10:38 am Permalink
Well I still think Bucky Covington should of been nominated! “To each his own” mainly to Corey, Cindy2, you can have your opinion’s but most of the country music loving crowd does not agree with you! “Another brick in the Wall” is a fun song that Bucky does mainly with his twin brother Rocky and the crowds love it! Just like when other artist’s do covers and they all do them nowadays at concerts. Usually bring back fond memories! I know it does for me since I like rock music also. Does the show on CMT called “Crossroads” ring a bell with any of you all? Sorry, I don’t agree with most of your assesments here because Bucky has been recognized and awarded elsewhere (New Faces, Aircheck country artist, Music Row artist, etc.) so I know that Bucky Covington is here to stay. Mark Miller of Sawyer Brown believes in him just as Dierks Bentley, Trace Atkins, and other artist’s that have asked him to be a part of their tour’s. Bucky just doesn’t “show up” and open for them!!!
May 18, 2008 at 8:36 am Permalink
Josh Turner really is the BEST vocalist, hands down.
May 19, 2008 at 5:18 pm Permalink
I agree with almost everything in here. Especially all your choices and comments about the new artists. I am always surprised when Eric Church is not nominated for any of the “new singer” categories. He is very talented. I am a huge Jack Ingram fan but he is not new to country music and he had a #1 hit I think 2 years ago with “Wherever You Are.” I’m also glad you raised the point that the best vocalist should probably be a good singer. haha. oh the academy… they have problems. Anyways, good article!
