2011 Reader Survey: Help Improve The 9513 and Win

Heading into the new year, we have a million ideas to improve The 9513, but we figured who could help us better narrow that list than our readers. So whether your love us or hate us, leave a little feedback in our short survey. It’ll help steer the direction we take in the coming year.
And as an extra incentive/thank you, you’ll have the option of entering your email address at the end to participate in a drawing for one of the following prizes:

Gosh, this is kinda spooky! How many of these survey results will include a recommendation to banish me from The 9513? Yikes! (lol)

Please don’t turn this into a pay site. Use advertising.

They do.

Survey completed. Hoping for the Tailgater. My son was just looking at something similar this weekend, so it’d be a great gift for him.

The one thing the site could use is a better indexing function – finding older reviews and articles is quite cumbersome and finding older comments nearly impossible
January 4, 2011 at 1:43 pm
@Ham: We’ve tried.
@PaulaW: I saw the Tailgater at Costco for $99 about a week ago. That’s about $30 cheaper than I’ve seen it anywhere else.
@Paul: I make regular changes to stuff under the hood without mentioning them. The relevancy of search results is one that I improved a few weeks ago. It’s been a thorn in my side as well, but should work much better now. As an alternative, you can use Google to search the site by typing the following (it’ll help find comments as well, rather than just articles):

Brady – I’m not sure what brand it was my son looked at, but it was $99 at FYE. I *think* the one he looked at also had a mic for karaoke. I didnt look at it too closely because I knew he was not in a position to buy it that day.
I’m sure if I win this, it will more than suffice for his needs. It would be a nice little belated Christmas present (he was in Iraq for Christmas so he missed out, as everytime I said “what would you like?” he said “I’m good”).
And you dont dare buy a boy his age something he hasnt asked for or shown an interest in, else you’ll be standing in the return line the following week!

(Now that I look at the tailgater in more detail, I see it has a mic also.)
:-)

Those prizes are kick ass!! Hope I win something! :) Love this place, and it’s definitely my go-to place for US Country music news. Thanks for all the hard work you guys put in!

While I could really use headphones that last more than three months without breaking… I chose something else..

Good site, with coverage of more than just what gets heard on commercial radio. People actually seem to have a good knowledge of the music here. Please don’t change too much about this site. The music itself should always be the main draw.

I heard this song “Stuck like glue” this morning, by Sugarland. Wow it just blew me away, I just love it. I will be playing this album for weeks to come. So up beat. Made me feel so good, when it is raining and cold.Amazing. Never heard of them before.

Sometimes it’s possible to have things set up so that the person who posts, and only that person, can edit mistakes in comments. As somebody who sometimes types fast and runs, leaving uncaught typos behind, I like when that’s possible. For other people’s sake.
January 5, 2011 at 8:14 am
It would be even better to be able to edit mistakes in other people’s comments.
January 5, 2011 at 8:24 am
Caroline: You first heard “Stuck Like Glue” on January 5th, 2011? It’s been out for months now. At first, I loved it too. However, I’ve heard it so many times on commercial radio now I’d almost rather…oh, never mind.
January 5, 2011 at 8:51 am
Larry, Stuck Like Glue has only recently started to get airplay on Hot AC in the past few weeks. So it’s now being aired to a new audience for the first time.

Barry,
We’ve had requests for that at Country Universe, but I’ve voted against being able to edit after publishing a comment, because people could go back and change their comments if called on something, therefore, ruining the integrity and continuity of the comment thread and potentially allowing for the “I never said that” defense. The way I see it, if somebody hits publish, they should have to stand by, clarify or apologize for what they say if necessary. I know what you mean about typing too fast though. It’s hypocritical, but since we do have that feature as editors of CU, I’ve definitely taken advantage of it.

All of these rules are works in progress everywhere, I guess, Leeann. I certainly see your point.
There’s the whole “anonymity” thing, too. I know why many prefer to comment without easy identification. It can also seem unbalanced and less than utterly fair hit-and-run if you’re a semi-public figure, anybody can look up who you are (or seem to be in an instant Google or Facebook search) , you use your name, and then somebody from the Snark Set drives by, drops personal attacks on you for having an opinion publicly expressed (or just for being somebody who’d head’s above the foxhole), and goes away without a trail.
(That actually doesn’t happen here, in any bad way, all that often–but out and around, it certainly does.)
We’re all trying to figure this new world out together. And separately!

“Sometimes it’s possible to have things set up so that the person who posts, and only that person, can edit mistakes in comments. As somebody who sometimes types fast and runs, leaving uncaught typos behind, I like when that’s possible. For other people’s sake.”
I agree with this.

Some message boards I’ve used in the past allow editing comments for only a set period of time; I wonder if that could be an option (so if something’s caught within a minute, it could be changed; but if it takes an hour, oh well it’s posted forever).
January 5, 2011 at 10:27 am
I like the option to be limited to a minute or so. I think that’s what Digg has – but I haven’t been there for awhile. If comments can be edited indefinitely, a clever editor can rewrite his/her comment to change the meanings of others’ responses and ruin the whole integrity of the system.
January 5, 2011 at 10:30 am
I’d like to see a registration system for comments so that one person has to use his/her same name all the time (much like you have on the forum section). They could still use a ‘screenname’ if they wanted to (ie:carriefan13) but keep them (or same IP) from registering multiple names. If possible.
January 5, 2011 at 10:34 am
On the other message board I use they have editing at anytime and it has become a problem with people changing their post except for spelling/grammar mistakes.
Another thing that message board has that I like is before you submit it shows if someone posted something while you were typing your post. Helps elimantes double posting.

…what makes me think you are not only referring to typos, jon?
January 5, 2011 at 2:25 pm
Can we start by editing Jon?
January 5, 2011 at 2:32 pm
How about adding something that removes off-topic comments? It’s not worth it to join a conversation when it goes from a Carrie Underwood song to a Britney/Christina comparision.
January 5, 2011 at 10:36 pm
A limited time edit button would be helpful for those who post before they think like me. A reply style of comments might be useful to actually be able to follow conversation threads rather than not knowing who just called someone this or that or having to read through twenty unrelated comments to find someone’s reply.
January 6, 2011 at 5:55 am
On the editing issue, I think Stephen H makes a suggestion that might satisfy the legitimate concerns raised by both Barry and Leeann. If posters have the ability to edit for 5 to 10 minutes, they’d have the opportunity to correct typos but not the ability to deny having posted something they actually did post.
Personally, I would like posters to have the ability to delete a comment if, at a later time they realized it contained inaccurate information or was inadvertently offensive in some way. I’m not particularly concerned about preserving the integrity of the thread– after all, we’re talking about comments on a music blog, not grand jury minutes.
January 6, 2011 at 8:30 am
I think it’s important because it’d be too easy to be dishonest and claim that I didn’t say something that I actually did say. At least if it’s in writing, I’d have to own up to it somehow. It’d also bring up questions of “Did you change your comment after I called you out on something?” To me, it’d be pointless to take the time to respond or debate if the other person could just go back and change what they said, in turn, making me look like an idiot. I agree that a timed option to edit is a good compromise though, because I see nothing wrong with rethinking how or what you’ve said right after the fact.
January 6, 2011 at 12:24 pm
What Leeann said. When I first started commenting regularly on sites like this, I wanted an edit comment button too, but the more I thought about it, the more I can see how so many would abuse it and cause the discussions here to become painstakingly hard to understand.
Also, I don’t think this site needs many tweaks. It’s my favorite music site on the web, and has been for quite a while now.
January 6, 2011 at 1:19 pm
Maybe instead of an editing button a spell check button would work better?
January 6, 2011 at 2:21 pm
How about an ignore button so you won’t have to read all the political BS that one poster constantly interjects into all his comments.
January 6, 2011 at 3:14 pm
Hear hear Texas Vet. Or if someone wants to edit it, “here, here”
