2009 CMA Awards Live Blog
It’s only a couple hours ’til show time, folks, and we at The 9513 are all abuzz with questions. Will Tim McGraw’s return to the CMA stage (he last performed at the 2005 awards) be a successful one? Will Taylor Swift stymie Kenny Chesney’s attempts to bring home a fifth Entertainer of the Year award? And what to make of host Brad Paisley’s recent tweet regarding his co-host’s dress, which allegedly doubles as a festive scarf?
Now, maybe you tune in to the CMAs because your favorite artist is nominated or because there’s a performance you want to catch. Maybe you’re just waiting for an onstage trainwreck so you can revel in the sweet, sweet, schadenfreude. Whatever your reasons for watching, watch it with us.
If you’re on the West Coast, check in on the live blog anyway, just so you know what you’re not missing. And East Coasters, should you decide to flip over to Glee or that History Channel special on Jack the Ripper, we’ll keep you filled in. For viewers of legal age, feel free to take part in the always entertaining award show drinking game, in which you imbibe every time someone on your television cries, changes his/her outfit, thanks a religious figure of his/her choosing, or woodenly reads from the teleprompter. But please exercise some caution: after all, it’s a three hour show, and you don’t want to be rushed to the ER with acute alcohol poisoning before Kid Rock sings.
You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll roll your eyes at the copious amounts of filler…it’s CMA time!
The 9513’s 2009 CMA Awards Predictions
Live Blog below the fold.
10:07 – Jim Malec: As we all sign off, I’ll invite everyone to keep the discussion going in the comments section of this post. Thanks y’all, and, for the love of God, kindly keep it country.
10:04 – Jim Malec: I’d also like to thank everyone who stuck with us in the comments as we experienced some server delays due to huge traffic.
10:03 – Jim Malec: I’d like to thank Pierce, Karlie and Juli for a job well done. I really enjoyed working with you tonight, as always.
9:57 – Jim Malec: As we exit the 43rd CMA Awards, one thing is for certain: Taylor Swift is the queen of the moment, and she wields an immense measure of power. Soon, she will no longer be a teenager, and she’s hinted at changing musical directions as she gets older. She has many pathways open to her, and which one she chooses to take will have a major impact on the direction of the music the follows her. In some ways, we are at her mercy.
9:58 – Pierce: Well, that’s it… I’m calling it a night folks. I’m going to go listen to some Alan Jackson and George Strait albums to help restore my faith. George Jones, on behalf of everyone 21 and under, I’m sorry… Goodnight!
9:57 – Karlie: Well, there we go.
9:55 – Pierce: I had a sneaky suspicion… the way they were hyping it almost made it too obvious. I should have reflected as much in my picks…
9:55 – Jim Malec: It’s a big warm and fuzzy moment as Taylor Swift brings her band up on stage.
9:54 – Jim Malec: Anyone who thinks Swift is faking it is crazy.
9:54 – Jim Malec: And the 2009 CMA Entertainer of The Year goes to… Taylor Swift.
9:51 – Jim Malec: As we approach Entertainer of The Year, I have a hard time thinking it’s going to anyone other than Swift.
9:49 – Juli: That Kenny Chesney/Dave Matthews performance was blessedly short. 11 minutes to go, folks.
9:47 – Pierce: The most fratastic performance of the evening for sure…
9:43 – Karlie: For once I buy Taylor’s Surprised Face.
9:40 – Jim Malec: Female Vocalist of the Year isn’t awarded just based on singing ability–it’s given to an artist who happens to be a Female Vocalist. That’s how I make sense of what just happened.
9:40 – Juli: I’d feel the same way if Kris Kristofferson hugged me too, Taylor Swift.
9:38 – Karlie: Lee Ann and Kris, FTW.
9:37 – Jim Malec: Jon, from the comments: “And the Greencards take the stage at the station Inn…”
9:37 – Juli: Maybe if the old man had raised his kids right, he wouldn’t have to leave his money to some yahoo he met in a bar. I hate this song.
9:37 – Jim Malec: Just throwing this out there: Isn’t it odd that “Shuttin’ Down Detroit” didn’t get a song or single nod?
9:34 – Jim Malec: Curly Currington is singing “People Are Crazy,” and judging by the song’s three nominations, I’d have to agree.
9:35 – Pierce: I’d RT elisa if this were twitter
9:34 – Jim Malec: Elisa, from the comments: “May I say that this is the most incredibly boring awards show that I have ever seen! Aside from an incredible Jennifer Nettles performance, it has been really dull.”
9:32 – Jim Malec: What’s more, I maintain that this song is beneath Reba’s legacy.
9:31 – Jim Malec: Reba just doesn’t have it tonight. This is a strange, semi-shrill vocal performance.
9:30 – Jim Malec: Next up? Reba performing “Consider Me Gone.”
One half of an hour left to go. Is this when the country music portion starts?
9:25 – Pierce: That may be the first time I’ve seen George with a mic in his hand.
9:24 – Jim Malec: Seriously, did something happen with Roy Clark that I missed? How disrespectful is this?
9:23 – Karlie: Wrong, Karlie. Wrong.
9:22 – Pierce: This performance is comparable to Mandrell… but McBride can’t play the steel guitar.
9:22 – Karlie: And by “what I think this means” I mean “George Jones is yet again invited to do a brief stint on the CMAs.”
9:21 – Jim Malec: Martina was singing “Country When Country Wasn’t Cool,” but the performance lacks charisma.
9:22 – Juli: I like Martina a lot better when she’s not singing about babies or angels or how special I am and how she just calls me hers.
9:21 – Karlie: Does this mean what I think this means?!?!?
9:20 – Jim Malec: So basically Roy Clark gets no love?
9:20 – Karlie: Just read that Jason Aldean has spent more time at #1 than any other country artist this year.
9:19 – Jim Malec: A very rudimentary performance from Aldean.
9:17 – Jim Malec: We’re back, and Jason Aldean is singing “Big Green Tractor.” Call me crazy, but I don’t mind this song. Nice to hear some melody.
9:13 – Pierce: in this house we choose to mute “big green tractor”
9:16 – Karlie: @Juli agreed.
9:13 – Juli: This commercial with Jane Lynch is the best moment of the night.
9:12 – Jim Malec: And we still have to endure Dave Matthews.
9:10 – Jim Malec: Brad takes home male vocalist. Not surprising at all, but really, who had the bigger year–him or Rucker? I think the Association missed on this one.
9:09 – Jim Malec: Given recent controversies, hard to imagine having LeAnn Rimes here…especially making jokes about how attractive country’s men are.
9:10 – Juli: That’s a really bad opening statement for Homewrecker Rimes…
9:08 – Pierce: Jim, I can recall when some performers have done two songs, but not both solo… usually one solo and one accompanied.
9:08 – Jim Malec: “Fifteen” is a really good song, but, wow, she just does not sound good live.
9:09 – Juli: There is nothing on Earth more frightening than the mass of teenage girls currently on my television.
9:06 – Jim Malec: Does anyone out there know how many other performers have done two songs on the same CMA Awards show?
9:01 – Jim Malec: Brooks and Dunn turn down Jennifer’s invitation to come on stage. They looked really unhappy about something.
8:59 – Jim Malec: What? Sugarland? Shocking.
8:58 – Karlie: @Jim Yeah, Kid Rock didn’t even work in “You can find me in a record store, it won’t take you long/I’m right after Jennings and Jones/Over in another section across the store.”
8:59 – Jim Malec: Next up, vocal duo of the year. Joey + Rory anyone?
8:58 – Jim Malec: Nice to see Jamey getting a standing O. Hey, was that the first one of the night?
8:57 – Jim Malec: I love Jamey and I love that song, but the whole Kid Rock thing was just a distraction.
8:56 – Jim Malec: What, exactly, does Kid Rock add to this performance?
8:54 – Pierce: Let me reiterate… Kid Rock is the latest inductee to the Music City Walk of Fame… I’m not going to shut up about that out that injustice.
8:55 – Jim Malec: It was my happy place, too, until Kid Rock had to bring John Rich into it.
8:54 – Jim Malec: Hey, it’s Kid Rock, but at least we get to hear “Between Jennings and Jones.”
8:54 – Karlie: Ahhh. My happy place.
8:53 – Jim Malec: Yes! Here comes Kid Rock! I’ve been waiting for this.
8:51 – Pierce: Yikes… this is why I’m not so sad to see B&D going.
8:50 – Jim Malec: Brooks and Dunn’s final CMA Awards appearance…until their unexpected, shocking reunion at the 2013 show.
8:49 – Jim Malec: Blake Boldt, from the comments: “Swift is now the fifth female act (Anne Murray, Patty Loveless, Dixie Chicks, Lee Ann Womack) to win Album of the Year.”
8:47 – Karlie: Randy Houser put very little enthusiasm behind that announcement.
8:44 – Jim Malec: Juli and CM correctly call it.
8:44 – Pierce:(silence)
8:43 – Jim Malec: Album of The Year goes to…Taylor Swift.
8:40 – Pierce: that kid will grow up to be little jimmy dickens
8:42 – Jim Malec: I’ll be honest, little kids just don’t amuse me like the rest of the world. Call me heartless.
8:41 – Jim Malec: Oh my gosh, what is Randy Houser wearing? Did he get that as Bell’s Outlet?
8:39 – Jim Malec: Jennifer is just letting loose on “Keep You,” it is truly an epic performance.
8:30 – Pierce: Kristian Bush is the best mediocre guitar playing accompanist everr!
8:29 – Juli: Can Zac Brown and his fiddler come back out?
8:26 – Pierce: OK… Farce the Music needs to get on this song.. please…
8:28 – Karlie: I’m not getting any connection between Tim McGraw and the lyrics he’s singing. He sounds fine, there’s just nothing there.
8:27 – Jim Malec: “Southern Voice” is the most pointless song we’ll hear tonight.
8:26 – Jim Malec: Oops…someone forgot to turn Tim McGraw’s mic on.
8:25 – Jim Malec: Fair warning: I have been tasked with including the word “Pesky” in tonight’s live blog.
8:23 – Pierce: @Jim Hmm, yeah… he just seems a little weak. You call that a solo?
8:23 – Jim Malec: What is up with this dragging mid-tempos? This is as boring as the Duaghtry song.
8:22 – Karlie: @Jim Guyliner is the new fu manchu.
8:22 – Jim Malec: I’ll repeat what I said earlier–Keith Urban does not look good tonight, and his voice sounds weak. Hope he’s OK.
8:20 – Jim Malec: We just had a reader find this blog by searching google for “Charles Kelley eyeliner.”
8:20 – Pierce: Oh yeah… that was epic.
8:20 – Jim Malec: Oh my God, it’s Little Jimmy Dickens. LJD just pulled a Kanye!
8:20 – Juli: Little Jimmy Dickens makes everything better, even tired Kanye jokes.
8:18 – Jim Malec: @Pierce: Vince was great, I’ve got nothing bad to say about Vince.
8:17 – Jim Malec: J.R. Journey from the comments: “Still not sure why Vince Gill was added to that song? Anyone else?” — Yes, because if you don’t include Vince it makes no sense having it on the damn show.
8:18 – Pierce: Maybe I just have my Vince blinders on… but I thought that was pretty good… (don’t fire me, please.)
8:15 – Jim Malec: @Karlie: Perhaps.
8:14 – Karlie: Perhaps Daughtry should have sang harmony on a Vince Gill song.
8:13 – Jim Malec: Including “Tennessee” in a song doesn’t make it country. This is boring adult contemporary music.
8:12 – Pierce: Alright… it’s official.. everything Vince Gill touches turns to gold.
8:11 – Karlie: The third American Idol alum so far tonight. Is Kelly Clarkson or Taylor Hicks in the house?
8:11 – Juli: I would like this Daughtry song if it had less Daughtry.
8:11 – Jim Malec: I find it hilarious that in order to make this seem more country, there’s a giant “Tennessee” screen in the background.
8:11 – Pierce: This should be interesting..
8:10 – Jim Malec: Kudos to Brad for working a Little Jimmy into his act. And, from Dickens to Daughtry.
8:10 – Juli: Aw, Darius is genuinely moved. Props to him.
8:09 – Jim Malec: Darius seems genuinely moved. Love that energy. We need more of that in country music.
8:09 – Pierce: and he was wrong… congrats Darius.
8:09 – Jim Malec: I predicted this right. I wish it would have gone to Jamey, but it’s tough to beat three #1s.
8:08 – Jim Malec: New Artist of The Year goes to: Darius Rucker.
8:08 – Pierce: Darius predicted earlier this week that ZBB would take this one…
8:08 – Juli: Holy Botox, Batman. I bet the muscles in Naomi Judd’s face haven’t moved since the Clinton administration.
8:07 – Jim Malec: Please sing. Pretty please.
8:07 – Jim Malec: Yay, the Judds!
8:06 – Karlie: I’m not a fan of dance choreography in country music award shows.
8:06 – Jim Malec: @Pierce: I have decided. But I’m not publicly allowed to say. Without getting slapped, anyway.
8:04 – Pierce: I can’t decide whether I’m disappointed over the “girl next door” era being over or not… hmmm.
8:04 – Jim Malec: I’d like to applaud Juli (8:01) for her use of the word “languorous.” Well played.
8:03 – Jim Malec: My better half just gave me evil eyes. I think I’m not supposed to be watching this.
8:01 – Juli: I think I need the fainting couch onstage more than Carrie Underwood and her languorous dancers.
8:03 – Karlie: Carrie is having a Lady Ga Ga moment.
8:03 – Jim Malec: I hate this song, but it sure is hard to hate this performance…
7:58 – Karlie: Um…a financial services commercial came on directly after that award featuring “I Run to You.” Coincidence?
7:59 – Pierce: Wow… I qualify this as a shocker…
7:58 – Karlie: Lady A is inspired by Rascal Flatts. This explains many things.
7:56 – Jim Malec: If the Eagles win I will shoot myself.
7:55 – Karlie: I’m just going to go ahead and call this now: Nickelback will be nominated in this category next year.
7:55 – Jim Malec: Hey, finally, here comes an award: Vocal Group of The Year.
7:55 – Pierce: What is Debra Barone doing at the CMAs???
7:54 – Juli: What’s up with the fake snow?
7:54 – Jim Malec: “Need You Now” is surprisingly honest.
7:54 – Pierce: this looks more like “baby its cold outside” than “need you now”
7:53 – Jim Malec: Country-ness aside, Lady A sounds wonderful.
7:51 – Juli: “Need You Now” is my shameful guilty pleasure song of the month.
7:51 – Jim Malec: Lady Antebellum doing the year’s best pop song, “Need You Now.”
7:51 – Karlie: From “Twang” to twangless.
7:50 – Jim Malec: Polite applause, but no one seems particularly excited.
7:48 – Jim Malec: I know it’s a cliched thing to say, but I swear every year it’s the same damn thing with his CMA performance. Same gestures, same body language, same facial expressions.
7:48 – Pierce: I think I just had a George-gasm..he’s the man.
7:47 – Jim Malec: Here’s King George doing “Twang.”
7:47 – Jim Malec: OK, so it just hit me–is this and awards show? Are they going to give out an award soon?
7:41 – Jim Malec: Who here thinks these guys have more talent in their left left pinkies than 95% of the rest of the performers on this show combined? Anyone?
7:41 – Karlie: I’m not going to lie, this makes me pumped about country music. Way to go, ZBB.
7:41 – Pierce: Uh oh… FCC’s coming for Zac…
7:41 – Jim Malec: OMG, ZBB said “bitch.” Edit that out, country radio.
7:40 – Karlie: Wooo! A bad word! Take that, mainstream radio.
7:40 – Juli: The devil’s fiddle solo is way better than Johnny’s.
7:40 – Jim Malec: No doubt about it though–ZBB is freakin’ for real.
7:39 – Jim Malec: I also don’t know why the pace of this is so fast. It’s a pretty odd performance in my opinion.
7:39 – Jim Malec: Zac Brown sounds kind of mechanical on this.
7:38 – Pierce: Love ZBB but this is just too predictable…
7:38 – Karlie: Zac has crazy eyes.
7:38 – Jim Malec: Zac Brown Band doesn’t get to do its own song. They’re covering “Devil Went Down To Georgia.”
7:36 – Karlie: Imagine that: Strip down the production for a second, and the artist sounds great.
7:36 – Jim Malec: I actually think he sounds better here than on the record. Brad’s singing it with more passion that usual.
7:34 – Pierce: Brad in his standard trendy tshirt and cowboy hat.
7:34 – Jim Malec: I meant “Welcome To The Future,” obviously.
7:34 – Karlie: I wonder if the people in the audience can hear Brad?
7:34 – Juli: Brad’s not sounding too great, but I dig the Pac Man graphics.
7:33 – Jim Malec: And here comes Brad Paisley with “American Saturday Night.” So far he sounds spot on, as always.
7:31 – Jim Malec: And we are having some server issues, folks. We doubled our capacity since last year, and you’re still rocking our sox off.
7:28 – Jim Malec: @Pierce: Well, to be fair that’s not saying much.
7:24 – Pierce: Indeed… best performance of the night…
7:27 – Karlie: Hoping Jamey comes back out to reprise his role as the preacher in the “White Liar” video.
7:27 – Jim Malec: This is Miranda best awards show performance, by far.
7:26 – Juli: So far Miranda sounds better than Taylor and Darius.
7:25 – Jim Malec: I really like the arrangement choice for “White Liar.” Miranda sounds great, and comfortable, and restrained. This is a solid vocal.
7:25 – Jim Malec: And now a performance from Miranda Lambert. She’s doing “White Liar.”
7:24 – Jim Malec: Carrie’s staying far, far away from Jamey Johnson…
7:24 – Karlie: Happy Veterans Day to JJ.
7:23 – Jim Malec: Really, really happy my prediction for “People Are Crazy” turned out to be wrong.
7:23 – Karlie: Woot! Clapping as if Jamey Johnson could hear me.
7:22 – Jim Malec: And the awards for Song of The Year goes to…”In Color.” Amen for Jamey Johnson!
7:23 – Juli: Yay Jamey!
7:22 – Jim Malec: And now “Song of The Year.” So basically, let’s get the most artsy of the awards out of the way first.
7:20 – Karlie: Darius’ dancing movements remind me of the Ricky Bobby interview on the Talledega Nights movie when he doesn’t know what to do with his hands.
7:21 – Jim Malec: The audio is terrible, but Darius is good enough that it still wasn’t a total trainwreck.
7:18 – Pierce: I want an explanation as to why awards shows always have awful sound…
7:18 – Karlie: Is it funny to anyone else that the word “Alright” is plastered behind him? No? OK, just me.
7:18 – Jim Malec: I appreciate the fact that Darius Rucker seems really passionate about his music.
7:17 – Jim Malec: Next up: Darius Rucker.
7:17 – Pierce: Wait… why did they show Leann? Did she have swine flu?
7:16 – Jim Malec: Yes, we all know Carrie Underwood is hot. And here comes another parody. These are funny but they will wear thin pretty soon.
7:15 – Jim Malec: Gotta figure this early win looks good for Lady A’s chances everywhere else.
7:13 – Pierce: I’m a little worried about all this Taylor EOY hyping… it sure makes a good story…
7:13 – Karlie: Definitely didn’t see that coming. I think I’d already forgotten about that song.
7:12 – Jim Malec: That’s somewhat shocking–and all 12 The 9513 staffers whiff.
7:11 – Jim Malec: Lady Antebellum takes single of year for “I Run To You.”
7:10 – Pierce: Look! It’s the most recent Music City Walk of Fame honoree… I kid you not.. no pun intended..
7:11 – Jim Malec: Here comes the award for single of the year.
7:10 – Karlie: Kid Rock looks like Shooter Jennings dressed like Molly Shannon in Superstar.
7:10 – Jim Malec: Kid Rock: as perverted as usual.
7:09 – Pierce: Sorry I’m late to the show… did I miss much?
7:09 – Karlie: I think Ronnie just mouthed “No way” when they said they wished they could stop the break up.
7:08 – Karlie: I agree Jim. She sounds great.
7:08 – Jim Malec: I wish Carrie would actually record something this country.
7:07 – Jim Malec: Carrie’s dress is reflecting off of Brad’s guitar and back onto her face.
7:06 – Karlie: A big shout out to Kanye for getting a Waylon and Willie song on the show.
7:05 – Jim Malec: Wow, I actually thought they were going to sing a country song…instead of using it as a prop for a joke.
7:05 – Jim Malec: So, according to Carrie, Brad Paisley will steal your heart and crush it?
7:05 – Juli: Carrie looks like a space age milkmaid.
7:04 – Karlie: Wow. I’m not really sure what to even say about that.
7:04 – Jim Malec: I have to say her vocals are sorta better than usual, but this whole thing is just really bizarre.
7:03 – Jim Malec: Oh, I guess that’s why they have the lyrics up on the big screen…
7:03 – Jim Malec: Can anyone explain what the hell is happening on stage right now? Or what the hell Taylor is singing?
7:03 – Juli: Hulk smash! Throw chairs!
7:02 – Karlie: Well, they’ve found a way to improve Taylor’s live performances. You can barely hear her. Luckily, the hair swinging makes up for it.
7:02 – Jim Malec: Is this the single worst CMA Awards opener ever?
7:02 – Juli: Stolen from a trip to the Twilight set, perhaps?
7:01 – Jim Malec: Taylor Swift is wearing a vampire/biker outfit.
7:01 – Karlie: I’m having a $50,000 Pyramid moment with this set.
7:01 – Jim Malec: I am actually scared of Taylor Swift right now. But not because of that really creepy intro.
7:00 – Karlie: Here we go. The anticipation is just killing me…
6:59 – Jim Malec: Almost there kids, thanks for helping me suffer through that Red Carpet “event.”
6:58 – Jim Malec: Awww, no strippers tonight? I’m leaving…
6:59 – Juli: Pranks involving strippers are the best pranks of all.
6:57 – Jim Malec: Who is that guy next to Jennifer Nettles, her limo driver?
6:56 – Juli: Keith Urban must be too weak from styling his hair to button his shirt all the way.
6:56 – Jim Malec: Keith Urban doesn’t look especially good tonight. Genuinely hope everything is OK with him.
6:50 – Jim Malec: What Faith Hill is wearing is not so much a necklace as a length of chain. Seriously, for anyone not watching, that thing goes down past her pelvis.
6:49 – Jim Malec: Tim just announced that he’s singing “Southern Voice.” I can hardly wait!
6:48 – Jim Malec: So Katie loves Robin Roberts buns and she also “loves [her] some Miranda Lambert.” Hmm….
6:46 – Jim Malec: Miranda Lambert got that necklace at New York And Co. for $10, so says my better half.
6:45 – Juli: Miranda Lambert totally wants to stab Lance Smith.
6:45 – Jim Malec: What will Randy Travis look like ten years from now?
6:43 – Jim Malec: Lance is now on pins and needles. But not literally. Although that would make more interesting television.
6:41 – Jim Malec: Do you think it’s difficult for Jason Aldean’s wife to find earrings that are bigger than his?
6:38 – Juli: Aw, Jason Aldean has his formal earrings in!
6:36 – Jim Malec: OMG, who doesn’t love little kids! This is the weirdest “interview”…
6:35 – Juli: Did Jimmy Dickens give this kid a loaner?
6:34 – Jim Malec: OK, now raise your hand if you wish the Judds would be performing in honor of their 25th CMA anniversary.
6:34 – Juli: What’s up with Wynonna’s weave?
6:33 – Jim Malec: Awkward, anybody?
6:33 – Jim Malec: And apparently Katie Cook likes Robin Robert’s buns…
6:32 – Jim Malec: Raise your hand if you care what Robin Roberts has to say about country music.
6:28 – Jim Malec: Zac Brown’s necktie: now available for $7.99 at Target.
6:23 – Jim Malec: Wow, boner jokes. The last thing I want to hear is Blake Shelton and Lance talking about their “bones.”
6:21 – Jim Malec: Hey Lance, let’s talk to Blake about Twitter. Yes, that’s original.
6:20 – Jim Malec: Daughtry: “Someone told me I should get Vince Gill on there. And I was like, who is Vince Gill?”
6:15 – Jim Malec: Uh oh, Zac Brown just said “Toes in the water, ass in the sand.” Why didn’t they put that in the song?
6:11 – Jim Malec: And now let’s talk to a couple of people who are irrelevant to country music.
6:11 – Jim Malec: Carrie has nine costume changes. Hell, I have eight!
6:09 – Jim Malec: OMG, Carrie is wearing Thea. But she isn’t wearing it all night! Whew….
6:06 – Jim Malec: Begin the overt commercialism: Tim’s interview is spontaneously followed by a trailer for his new movie.
6:03 – Jim Malec: Tim McGraw is sporting his typical V neck on the carpet (how classy), but where’s that manly chest? Who wears V necks with an undershirt?
6:01 – Jim Malec: And here we go with CMT’s Red Carpet show. first interview is Lady A, and Dave and Charles are wearing suits that are way too small. How cool.

I’m wondering who’s gonna pay tribute to the veterans with a new song tonight; you know it’s gonna happen.
And with that, thanks to all the vets out there, we appreciate what y’all do.

The doors have just opened in the Sommet Center. Pink signs surround the arena announcing that the event is SOLD OUT, though that doesn’t stop gobs of desperate folks from coming to my box office and asking if there are tickets available. Reading FAIL.

I’ll be around during CMT’s Red Carpet show, in case anyone wants join me for some celebrity fun.
November 11, 2009 at 6:13 pm Permalink
I don’t plan on watching out here on the West Coast, but while I’m here at work (I work afternoons) no reason I can’t check out this snarkfest! Will Chuck and Julianne burst into tears when they see each other? Oh, the suspense is killing me! (lol)
November 11, 2009 at 6:33 pm Permalink
Wow Jim, that Red Carpet action is about as deep and significant as, well, mainstream country music these days! Shocker! (lol) Its too bad they don’t have Joan and Melissa Rivers on hand for some fashion commentary.
PS – Those Lady A. guys must have dug their high school graduations suits out of their closets…
November 11, 2009 at 6:35 pm Permalink
I would just like to say Jim Malec you rock!!
November 11, 2009 at 6:35 pm Permalink
Blake Shelton on Red Carpet. I love this guy. Funny as hell. I wonder if he’ll be that way if he ever stops drinking.
November 11, 2009 at 6:36 pm Permalink
That suit is sweet!
November 11, 2009 at 6:36 pm Permalink
Thanks Nikki, you also rock.
November 11, 2009 at 6:39 pm Permalink
Just turned the CMT Red Carpet show on … Reba is talking to Katie Cook right now about Brooks & Dunn’s retirement, and her tour with George Strait.
November 11, 2009 at 6:39 pm Permalink
Anyone know if there’s going to be an online stream of the show?
November 11, 2009 at 6:43 pm Permalink
Glad I cant see this awkward tv…wait, no I wish I could!
November 11, 2009 at 6:43 pm Permalink
Jim, I think we should mate….I mean date.
November 11, 2009 at 6:44 pm Permalink
Martina is performing with George Jones
November 11, 2009 at 6:44 pm Permalink
@Nikki: I have absolutely no problem with that.
November 11, 2009 at 6:45 pm Permalink
How does Lance have a job in TV???
November 11, 2009 at 6:46 pm Permalink
Martina is singing with George Jones huh? That sounds interesting.
Miranda is looking great tonight too.

That’s what I heard, could have just been rumor but supposedly this person knows
November 11, 2009 at 6:49 pm Permalink
So Jason Aldean is going for the Pirate look huh? I guess he figures it worked for Kenny Chesney.
In 10 years Randy Travis will probably look like Chuck Connors inside his open casket…

Jim, this partly explains Katie’s black leather dominatrix get up during the last season of Nashville Star.

November 11, 2009 at 6:58 pm Permalink
@Brady: Do you have any more pictures where you found that one?
November 11, 2009 at 6:59 pm Permalink
I though she had something with more straps? Hmm…

There are a couple more on our Nashville Star live blog.
November 11, 2009 at 7:01 pm Permalink
No strippers! Damn, and I was so hoping Miley Cyrus was going to make a guest appearance.
November 11, 2009 at 7:01 pm Permalink
Ok – so I watched it (sort of) while doing other things, and I am glad I did because I LOVE LOVE LOVE little Blake Dixon. He was so precious!! (Yes, the video was bad but it wasnt Blakes fault – his original video was great, but the way they cut it into Randy’s video was bad).
November 11, 2009 at 7:03 pm Permalink
Biker outfit and stripper pole. Hello country in 2010….
November 11, 2009 at 7:04 pm Permalink
Paula, forgive my ignorance, but who is Blake Dixon????
November 11, 2009 at 7:04 pm Permalink
Taylor Swift still can’t sing. Put her on first and get it over with. With a stripper pole no less.
November 11, 2009 at 7:05 pm Permalink
@KathyP & Jim…agreed
November 11, 2009 at 7:06 pm Permalink
Rick, Blake was on the red carpet show — he is the little kid in Randy Houser’s “Boots On” video.
I’m not watching the awards though. I just cant stomach it. (I also enjoyed seeing Randy Travis on the red carpet.)
November 11, 2009 at 7:06 pm Permalink
No strippers, but a little pole-dancing and rock and roll hair banging. Oh, and now she’s on the floor. Is this supposed to be a production or the rehearsal?
November 11, 2009 at 7:08 pm Permalink
Taylor gets a second song…..????
Could Eric Church, Jamey Johnson and others start a brawl and make the pain stop
November 11, 2009 at 7:08 pm Permalink
Oh, no! Swift’s doing another ‘number’ later. Maybe I’ll switch over to Olberman or O’reilly or Hannity then.
November 11, 2009 at 7:09 pm Permalink
Hmm, now I’m curious to hear Carrie when it comes on. Damn this two hour time difference.
November 11, 2009 at 7:10 pm Permalink
DID TAYLOR SWIFT ALREADY PLAY?
November 11, 2009 at 7:10 pm Permalink
I have to say I’m enjoying these songs. I knew a Brooks & Dunn divorce joke was in order. This is the best way I can think of to say it.
November 11, 2009 at 7:12 pm Permalink
Brad and Carrie do make pretty good hosts.
November 11, 2009 at 7:13 pm Permalink
That was a lame song, can’t believe it won single of the year.
November 11, 2009 at 7:14 pm Permalink
@ JR..they aren’t bad.
@Jim…def shocking

Wow. That Taylor Swift thing was
T-E-R-R-I-B-L-E….she is only proving George Jones’ point. And I like Taylor – but that isn’t country it is POP! Ugh!
November 11, 2009 at 7:16 pm Permalink
@Missy: I wonder why Taylor et al went with that song.
November 11, 2009 at 7:17 pm Permalink
We’re starting to experience a little bit of server slowness.
November 11, 2009 at 7:18 pm Permalink
ok, the funny song bit has worn thin…
November 11, 2009 at 7:18 pm Permalink
Yeah, the server is definitely starting to groan. We’ve already got a large number of people reading.
November 11, 2009 at 7:19 pm Permalink
Darius – way off. sounds awful.
November 11, 2009 at 7:19 pm Permalink
Gotta be one of Taylors worst porformances ever, when will they learn.
November 11, 2009 at 7:20 pm Permalink
Carrie looking like a Milkmaid? Was she wearing lederhosen? Please say no or I might have to DVR this dang thing after all! (lol)
November 11, 2009 at 7:21 pm Permalink
Jim – someone is giving bad advice? The “other” Taylor likes it? It was the only song where she could incorporate a Miley Cyrus pole slide….so gross….disappointed. And Lady A over Jamey J? Wow. Ballot stuffing? This is worse than Karzai’s fix on the Afghanistan election.
November 11, 2009 at 7:23 pm Permalink
Jamey Johnson – there is a God in heaven. Wonderful!

Love “White Liar!” hope the sound is better!
November 11, 2009 at 7:25 pm Permalink
I’m glad to know I was waayyy wrong about Jamey not winning anything! I hope your 9513 predictions are spot on in Jamey’s case. Go Jamey!

Only Miranda could rock the Herve Leger look with BOOTS! ha!
November 11, 2009 at 7:27 pm Permalink
I think I like this performance better than the album version of this song. It’s more stripped believe it or not.
November 11, 2009 at 7:30 pm Permalink
Really if “That Lonesome Song” isn’t the winner….don’t think I can move to Nashville in two weeks as planned. Ha!
November 11, 2009 at 7:31 pm Permalink
Miranda is hot, beer is good and Lady A winning is crazy…
November 11, 2009 at 7:33 pm Permalink
Serious server issues now.
November 11, 2009 at 7:35 pm Permalink
Swift is the greatest atrocity in Country music. She needs to stop blighting the genre with her act.
November 11, 2009 at 7:39 pm Permalink
In an interview about Hillbilly Bone, I think Blake Shelton said he always prefers it when Miranda performs “stripped down”…
November 11, 2009 at 7:45 pm Permalink
I thought ZBB did a killer job. It might say more about me then it does them, but I was entertained.
November 11, 2009 at 7:45 pm Permalink
Re: Server Issues … it just took me about 3 minutes to refresh the page. Hope it’s fixed soon. Country Universe live blog is working fine, so I knew it wasn’t my connection.
Additionally, with 3 major hits – and their debut single up for awards itself – I don’t understand the Zac Brown Band doing a cover. They’re doing a technically proficient job, but I agree with whoever said this was predictable. I think they’re aiming to take over for Alabama as country/southern rock superstars. I also think they can do it.
November 11, 2009 at 7:45 pm Permalink
@Jim…absolutely they have 95% more!!
November 11, 2009 at 7:47 pm Permalink
@J.R. Journey…we have enormous traffic right now.
November 11, 2009 at 7:50 pm Permalink
Thanks for the response, Jim. I guess that’s good news and bad.
Even when Strait does pedestrian material like this, he still sounds better and just comes off more authentic than the younger crowd. I’m entertained.
November 11, 2009 at 7:52 pm Permalink
Heh, I’m trying to load the official CMA AWards website and it appears they’re getting slammed, too.
November 11, 2009 at 7:52 pm Permalink
@J.R.: Like I said in the blog, we actually doubled capacity over last year.
November 11, 2009 at 7:53 pm Permalink
I hear George Strait is going to star in a country music oriented remake of the film “The Cooler” in the William H. Macy role! Whenever a drunken country concert audience gets too rowdy and unruly they’ll just bring George on stage to perform “Twang”…
November 11, 2009 at 7:53 pm Permalink
zac brown band needs their OWN songs…they have some good ones, but too many covers…
November 11, 2009 at 7:55 pm Permalink
I’m very, very impressed by Zac Brown Band. Who dares go out and NOT perform their latest radio single (EXACTLY like the recording, at that)?
November 11, 2009 at 7:58 pm Permalink
I am very happy with this choice. I was rooting for Zac Brown, but these guys were my second choice.
November 11, 2009 at 8:05 pm Permalink
I’m satisfied with the Lady A choice, though I wish that LBT had strung together enough success in the last few years to steal one from the Flatts. I would’ve voted for Zac Brown Band, and their perf confirmed by pick.
As happy as I am for Lady A, the Single of the Year award should signify the best song to represent country music within the given year, and “I Run to You” is one of the weakest choices ever made in this category. The Capitol marketing department is clearly earning their salaries, though.
It’s now the second hour, and I’m feeling the depression from Modern Family being preempted this week.
November 11, 2009 at 8:05 pm Permalink
But Jim, The Eagles are far more country than Lady Antebellum…
November 11, 2009 at 8:06 pm Permalink
Is this Carrie Underwood’s first genuinely bad live performance?
November 11, 2009 at 8:10 pm Permalink
Just to put it in perspective for everyone, the CMA’s have been going on for an hour, and us on the West Coast still have an hour before they start on the boob tube.
Lame.
November 11, 2009 at 8:11 pm Permalink
Surprised by this win, but not at all disappointed. Darius made a solid album, and it was country too.
November 11, 2009 at 8:12 pm Permalink
What’d I say about Capitol?
Country radio is not “taking a chance” by playing a pop singer’s records.
November 11, 2009 at 8:12 pm Permalink
American Idol just spits them out, huh? But I LOVE Vince…..partied with him on a Southwest flight once…made my week!
November 11, 2009 at 8:13 pm Permalink

November 11, 2009 at 8:15 pm Permalink
So what’s everyone think from the awards given out so far? I’m thinking at most Swift might win album of the year, if she wins more than that I’ll be shocked, and I won’t be surprised if she wins none. But they sure promote her on the commercials between segments of the show
November 11, 2009 at 8:15 pm Permalink
Rick–well done.
November 11, 2009 at 8:16 pm Permalink
Were any of the awards announced pre-show? How’s everyone doing on their predictions?
November 11, 2009 at 8:16 pm Permalink
Still not sure why Vince Gill was added to that song? Anyone else?
November 11, 2009 at 8:18 pm Permalink

Love Little Jimmy, but the Kanye joke isn’t even remotely funny anymore.

“Well Jamey Johnson winning an award blew mine to hell! I’m still holding out hope for a write-in win in the Best Single category for Sarah Buxton’s “Outside My Window”! (lol)”
Been a big fan of Sarah Buxton for a long time. She did co-write a song with Taylor that Taylor recorded, I bet it would have gone number one or at least charted good. don’t know what happened with that. Found it on one of Sarah’s websites I was listening to a while back
November 11, 2009 at 8:25 pm Permalink
Just got set straight about Vince over at CU. Vince sang on the album version of the Daughtry song, which I did not know. So I guess that’s why it was turned into a duet with Vince – I thought Vince was just added for the CMA show.
Also, really loved the Little Jimmy Dickens bit. Funny stuff – had me laughing out loud.
November 11, 2009 at 8:26 pm Permalink
Jim – I think Keith looks less styled and more natural…what is worrying you?
November 11, 2009 at 8:26 pm Permalink
I wonder if Keith has the H1N1 virus? If so, he should be singing with a mask on! (lol)
November 11, 2009 at 8:27 pm Permalink
@Missy: He seems thin and washed out.

November 11, 2009 at 8:36 pm Permalink
Taylor sounds bad on her opening song. No CMA award worthy
November 11, 2009 at 8:39 pm Permalink
Jim, just sounds like a new father with young children to me…

The CMA’s would lose all credibility if Swift wins anything more than Video of the Year. And even allowing that piece of juvenile tripe to win would stain its credibility.
November 11, 2009 at 8:45 pm Permalink
I honestly didn’t think Taylor would win this award. I thought she had a better chance at Entertainer than Album. Guess she may take both.
November 11, 2009 at 8:47 pm Permalink
Swift is now the fifth female act (Anne Murray, Patty Loveless, Dixie Chicks, Lee Ann Womack) to win Album of the Year.
November 11, 2009 at 8:54 pm Permalink
Well it seems to have been loved by the largest number of people, so perhaps it’s as deserving as any other of the nominees. I suppose they all have their faults and positives.
November 11, 2009 at 8:54 pm Permalink
The CMA’s are officially as bad as the ACMs.

Agree wholeheartedly. Can’t believe Keith Urban or Paisley didn’t win EOTY for the ACMs
November 11, 2009 at 8:57 pm Permalink
I don’t see the point of adding Kid Rock to this song either. Great song and Jamey did a fine job solo on the album. Plus, Kid Rock is throwing in shout-outs to John Rich. Ugh.
Thanks for trivia, Blake.

I have to agree, Razor X. Fearless is just a piece of infantile, Pop tripe and this just shows that the CMAs are as horrible as the ACMs.

“Up next, a moving performance by Taylor Swift you won’t wanna miss.” Wanna bet.
2 big problems here:
Moving performance/Taylor Swift. no comment necessary.
Won’t wanna miss – this from the network announcer. I guess English wasn’t his college major.
November 11, 2009 at 9:07 pm Permalink
Immersing myself in history and these homemade screwdrivers eases the pain.
Also, Swift (quite obviously) is the youngest Album winner (19). Natalie Maines was about to turn 26 when Fly won in 2000.
For all the talk about Sony BMG and their “bloc voting,” I need to note that they’re responsible for a grand total of 0.5 awards so far (Paisley’s Vocal Event win).
November 11, 2009 at 9:09 pm Permalink
I am missing the new episode of South Park to watch Taylor Swift sing?
November 11, 2009 at 9:10 pm Permalink
Ronnie Dunn had a particularly sour look on his face when Sugarland offered their props.
November 11, 2009 at 9:15 pm Permalink
Brooks and Dunn are totally that married couple waiting to fight until they’re in the car on the way home.
November 11, 2009 at 9:19 pm Permalink
People here always make the comments that Swift can’t sing. She doesn’t have the same voice Carrie or Reba or Miranda has, but her voice works for her songs. And is says a lot for her personality and charisma and songwriting that with so many critics down on her voice, she still connects with her audience. I don’t know if she’d have that same connection if she had a more traditionally powerful voice, it’s something about the vulnerability that comes across because it isn’t perfect that garners her the love of her fans. And you have to give her credit, she’s said herself in past interviews she knows there are a thousand other girls in Nashville that can sing rings around her, so to get up in front of millions and take the constant criticism of her voice and still sing her songs takes commitment and love for what she does.
November 11, 2009 at 9:22 pm Permalink
Jim, how do you figure Rucker had a bigger year than Paisley?
November 11, 2009 at 9:22 pm Permalink
@Jim: Rascal Flatts opened the ‘07 show and then sang that lovely duet with Jamie Foxx towards the end, remember? It seems to be a recent trend for the act to take the stage twice, at least if you don’t count Hall of Fame/tribute/special presentation performances.
November 11, 2009 at 9:23 pm Permalink
It’s really great to see the Hall of Fame inductees getting some screen time. And they’re even letting a contemporary star sing a classic hit. They almost got it right. At least this is better than letting them take a bow from the audience.
November 11, 2009 at 9:23 pm Permalink
@Brady: Paisly did what he does. To do what Rucker did in this landscape was much more difficult.
November 11, 2009 at 9:25 pm Permalink
Hey, they’re even letting Barbara take the stage! How cool.
November 11, 2009 at 9:25 pm Permalink
People here always make the comments that Swift can’t sing. She doesn’t have the same voice Carrie or Reba or Miranda has, but her voice works for her songs.
Load of rubbish. She’s so vocally lacking that even some rappers can outsing her if they try. She has next to no interpretive ability and is a bottom tier vocalist.
November 11, 2009 at 9:26 pm Permalink
Y’all, we’re all country when country isn’t cool. On another note, I love Martina’s dress. That shade of purple is the color this season. Thankful that Babs is receiving some airtime.
November 11, 2009 at 9:28 pm Permalink
@Brady: Also, Darius had three #1s this year compared to Brad’s one (“Welcome To The Future” missed).
November 11, 2009 at 9:32 pm Permalink
May I say that this is the most incredibly boring awards show that I have ever seen! Aside from an incredible Jennifer Nettles performance, it has been really dull.
November 11, 2009 at 9:36 pm Permalink
Did Urban have any #1s this year? Personally I’d have gone with him before Rucker or Paisley, as I like his voice more, and George second.
November 11, 2009 at 9:36 pm Permalink
And the Greencards take the stage at the station Inn…
November 11, 2009 at 9:37 pm Permalink
One of the best vocals of the evening, but Reba, at 55 and among the greatest-ever female country singers, should not be in the position of having to elevate mediocre material.
November 11, 2009 at 9:38 pm Permalink
Rucker had big time name recognition, though. Anyhow, Paisley had 3 #1s as well, in addition to two #1 albums. Rucker’s album was released before the eligibility period, so it doesn’t even count.
Besides, I’m not sure they should be awarding a vocalist award based mostly on success and difficulty of accomplishment.
November 11, 2009 at 9:38 pm Permalink
Jennifer Nettles is a lovely woman, but her voice for me is like her name, very prickly. sometimes I like it but sometimes it grates on my nerves.
November 11, 2009 at 9:40 pm Permalink
The #1s I was counting with in 2009, so you’re right about that.
I disagree with you on your other points. I think what Rucker–a black man–accomplished as a new artist in this environment was astonishing.
November 11, 2009 at 9:41 pm Permalink
Okay….the stupified looks and sophomoric reactions are old and tired. Enough. Taylor. Swift. UGGGGHHH!!!
November 11, 2009 at 9:44 pm Permalink
Quick, somebody pour out a 40 for Country Music.
November 11, 2009 at 9:45 pm Permalink

November 11, 2009 at 9:50 pm Permalink
Wow…what a bunch of cry babies here…
November 11, 2009 at 9:52 pm Permalink
My first post was eaten: Darius Rucker’s album was released in the eligibility period (September 16, 2008). I do agree with Brady, though. Brad’s had a few hit singles, two No. 1 albums and a strong year on the road. Toss in the White House invitation and his CMA hosting duties and I think he’s earned his stripes. Rucker, for his enthusiasm, love of country music and commercial stats, is a remarkable story, though.
I wish Kristofferson had just handed the Female Vocalist award to Womack and been done with it. Kinda odd to see her presenting when she deserved to be nominated.
According to the CMA criteria, the Female Vocalist honor is given to the woman who has the best performances live and on record during the year. Using that definition, I don’t think Swift earned it. She fits much more within the Entertainer “guidelines.”
November 11, 2009 at 9:52 pm Permalink
I see the internetz country blogs esploding because of this the next few weeks.
November 11, 2009 at 9:53 pm Permalink
ok officially CMA FVOTY JOKE! Here you have 4 people who sing in tune and much better than the one who won! Selling records does not mean you are a good vocalist! I turned off the TV. I thought it would be between Reba or Miranda. But Taylor! The one who just got awful reviews for singing off key on “Dancing with the stars” who confirmed that she doesn’t show her best side when singing live? I’m sick right now. My faith in the CMA’s went to 0.
November 11, 2009 at 9:54 pm Permalink
Let’s not include “Play” in conversations about Male Vocalist of The Year.
November 11, 2009 at 9:55 pm Permalink
Oh yeh..CHarlie Pride was the break out performer 20 yrs ago. One of the best
November 11, 2009 at 9:55 pm Permalink
Jim, her winning FVOTY makes me think she won’t win EOTY. I can’t see her sweeping.
November 11, 2009 at 9:56 pm Permalink
I think we should have a day of silence for Country Music tomorrow.
Good catch on the Rucker album, Blake. I was commenting based on the release of the first single and forgetting that it came out before the album. Doh!
November 11, 2009 at 9:57 pm Permalink
I knew it! Congragulations to Taylor Swift. I have nothing negative to say about this young lady. But I’ll probably get a laugh out of everybody’s comments.
And good night to everybody. This has been a fun night!

Artists who have won four or fewer CMAs in their careers: Trisha Yearwood (3), Emmylou Harris (3), Conway Twitty (4).

Honestly there should be an award for top sales, or top earner and she’d qualify.. but vocalist… isn’t that reserved for people who can carry a tune.. sorry Taylor! She’s got some talent, and a lot of fan pull.. but to win that is just unethical in my opinion…
November 11, 2009 at 10:13 pm Permalink
I don’t think one day of silence will be enough. After decades of fighting for and demanding respect, country music has just proven itself to be even more stupid than its naysayers have always said it was.
I suppose this is the time when I finally start calling myself an Americana fan instead of a country fan.

@Vicki.. I think that’s why they reserved it until the end of the show… so it wouldn’t kill the ratings too too much when half the viewing audience see’s thru it and shuts off their t.v.’s.. It’s a sham! I think Miranda should have won….

Taylor seems to be on top right now in everything, but in a way I feel sorry for her. This is going to generate a lot of backlash from Carrie fans and Traditionalists and even kanye and hip-hop fans. From now on, as frenetic as the media scrutiny she’s had over the last year, it’s going to be much greater and there are going to be people actually out for blood. They will be looking and trying every way they can to find something to bring her down, and since no one is perfect something is going to be pulled up and then blown up, whether it deserves to be or not, in an attempt to topple her. Like I said, I feel kinda sorry for her and I feel sorry for country music that she has virtually become the pop of 10 years ago. She could have stayed country and in doing so actually helped to build the genre, without sacrificing much of her current popularity. We’ll have to see where it all goes. The criticisms of her voice will be the harshest, tho as I said before, what most bloggers here and commentors see as her vocal faults are actually what makes her singing work, and makes her songs work.

I dont think Taylor is completely faking, but the whole “oh my God, this is so shocking” attitude she has at every damn rewards show is getting old. Unless she is far more self-aware than we all give her credit for and is legitimately shocked they give out rewards to people with mediocre talent, then I do think part of it is an act.
I’m sorry, but I have yet to see a performance of hers where when she finishes singing or getting an award, where she doesnt act starstruck or shocked. It’s old. She doesnt need to act like Kanye, but at some point it would be nice to drop that act/habit/whatever.
I didnt watch the entire show, but the only performance that I liked was the Zac Brown Bands song. That was it. I’m not a huge fan of theirs, but I did like the SOB drop on live TV and imagining all the parents sitting with their Taylor Swift fan kids getting upset.
November 11, 2009 at 10:34 pm Permalink
OK so I lied – I watched a little. Ironically, started at George Strait. Enjoyed it overall – except the blinding video in the background and the ironic fact that the steel didn’t make it to the TV sound and you could only hear it from what was getting picked up onstage.
Lady Antebellum was alright. Alt-rock but I was ok with it.
Carrie Underwood = Lady Gaga for sure.
The Judds have become a living caricature of themselves.
Darius Rucker – I dig his enthusiasm. Wish I could have heard the songs that he wrote that were too country for Capital to release.
Keith Urban HAD to have been going through some kind of machine. If not, he’s got an impeccable voice.
Vince Gill – it didn’t sound bad because Vince is such a versatile artist. It just didn’t do anything for me.
I almost fell out of my chair laughing – My 8 year old son RAN into the room when Darius Rucker was going up for his award and they were playing his music in the background. “Is that Nickelback?”

It’s no more the end of the world than when Kenny was winning it year after year by recording bar band/frat boy songs.
Taylor is a fad. That’s not to discount her songwriting talents, which are quite good for someone her age and with little life experience she has, but Nashville and the music business will always go where the money is. It’s been that way for decades now and will continue to be that way.
When Eddy Arnold and Porter Wagoner were on the top of the charts it was next to impossible to get a song cut if it didnt include strings and you didnt wear a nudie suit.
When Waylon and Willie were on the top of the charts it was hard for male singers without a scruffy face and more edgy lyrics to get on the charts.
When Ronnie Milsap and Conway were ruling the charts it was hard to get on the charts if you didnt appeal to the Urban Cowboy crowd.
When Garth was ruling the charts if you didnt have hat and dress like a fictional cowboy it was hard to get on the charts.
When Shania was ruling the charts, you needed pop songs to get on the charts.
The list goes on and on.
Right now Nashville and the record labels will milk the Taylor fad for all it is. Fact is, while I dislike her music, she sells records. Not many artists can say that anymore. So in the meanwhile we are gonna get more acts like Love And Theft and Gloriana and eventually they will fade away and I suspect Taylor will also see a dip as the Twilight fans grow up and get tired of her.
The only saving grace for us music fans is that unlike in previous decades, we can still get to listen to the music we like. I hate Taylor’s music. That being said, there are so many alternative avenues to listen to music I DO like, it really shouldnt bother us or me, as much as it does.

I’ll preface my comments by saying that I’m not a country music fan, I’m more a rock guy myself, but I did watch this awards show tonight with my wife.
The show opened with an off key, nearly impossible to understand song by Miss Swift with a performance that was all over the place. I’m not even sure she knew what the heck she was doing up there. Whatever it was, it wasn’t singing and it was far from what I’d consider acceptable from a top quality performer in just about every aspect you can think of. Was it just me, or did it look like the crowd was bewildered/laughing a little when they cut to them after she was done?
The show continued and in her defense, most of the artists after her sounded pretty bad live save for a few and there were sound problems galore so, maybe that had something to do with the poor singing, or maybe nobody can really sing anymore since they can be pitch corrected and quantized in the studio.
I just find it laughable that the person held up for all to see, the current cream of the crop in the country landscape can’t sing a lick without all the studio tricks. It’s pitiful really, especially considering the long line of great singers in country music history. Sure country isn’t my thing, but I know a good singer when I hear one and you Miss Swift, you’re just not good.
Oh, and way to show a little class in the closing seconds Carrie Underwood. Your PR firm will love you for that.

Swift winning Female Vocalist probably wouldn’t have been so bad if she even sounded halfway mediocre on her performances.
Her seizure-induced hair-tossing opening performance was beyond horrific. I must admit that including fans to sing to hide her vocal limitations was a nice touch.
Female Vocalist indeed! Somewhere, Shania is seething. And Shania was a better vocalist between the two.

Absolutely true. Anyone with ears could tell that she is dreadful and can’t sing at all. You Belong With Me is a horrible, atrocious vocal even with the studio tricks and her other recordings aren’t much better.

For the most part, I was pleased with the results on tonight’s show. I’m happy for Taylor and her having such a big night. I was rooting for Carrie for Best Female Vocalist, but oh well. All of the nominees were good. I’m also glad Lady Antebellum was getting some love tonight. I think they’re a great new edition to the contemporary country scene.
I loved the Daughtry and Vince Gill performance. I’m glad Reba’s new song is doing well – she performed it great tonight. Carrie and Brad did great again hosting, and Martina McBride shines as usual. Sugarland continues to impress, but their acceptance speech turned really awkward when they tried to bring Brooks & Dunn on the stage. Well, they were trying to do a nice thing anyway.
I enjoyed the show and will watch again next year.

“… “Congragulations to Taylor Swift. I have nothing negative to say about this young lady. But I’ll probably get a laugh out of everybody’s comments.
And good night to everybody. This has been a fun night!”
Razor X said: “What have you been smoking, J.R.?”
I won’t deny enjoying the reefer, especially on CMA night, but I wasn’t smoking any tonight, unfortunately. Though I was pulling for Brad Paisley in the Entertainer race, I am genuinely happy for Swift. She displayed humility, grace, and honesty in her acceptance speech. And she’s been the most visible ambassador for country music in the past year, and always represents the genre with her best foot forward. Her music isn’t my taste, and I agree it’s not traditional, but neither is Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, or Shania Twain – all the artists who’ve won in the past decade besides the Dixie Chicks, who were really more neo-traditional.
So I can’t discount her victory just because she doesn’t fit a traditional mold. Mainstream country has moved way beyond that, and while I don’t like it as much as the sounds of yesteryear – and do equate Swift’s success with the teenagization of country music – I still think the young lady is a fine representative of the genre. I’m not even a fan of her music. I played her Fearless album once, and that was enough. But I’ll contend that she’s a genuinely nice girl and deserves the award probably as much or more than any other nominee.
Country music may swing back to the traditional in the years to come, but right now, pop-country is mainstream and what’s selling – as evidenced by the winners and performers on tonight’s show, and Swift is the best representation of that.
November 12, 2009 at 12:43 am Permalink

November 12, 2009 at 12:51 am Permalink
I don’t understand how you can call Swift a good ambassador for the genre. Her “bringing in” new fans to country music is baloney. Because her fans don’t need to turn to country radio to listen to her. They can listen to her on pop radio just fine, without needing to know who the heck this weirdo Jamey Johnson is. Along with Kanye (whom she probably should have thanked for helping her win awards tonight), Lady Gaga, Fergie, Britney, etc. It’s not like these “new” young fans of country are hearing her on the radio and then she’ll be followed by Leanne Womack, Reba, Brad, ZBB, etc. She’s just bringing new fans to herself. What kind of an “ambassador” is that?
And that gyration exhibition to open the show tonight? Yes, very, very nice example for the teenagers to emulate. “Hey mom, Taylor Swift is sliding down the pole. She’s 19 years old. I’m 16 years old, close to her age. It’s ok if I do it too, right?”

Because Taylor Swift has a good reputation you don’t think she deserves the award. If she was a bad girl that would be a different story. It is great that she lives the way she does for the younger generation to have an example that you can be good and make it.

As the show started and Taylor started her number, I came close to turning the channel. But being a fan of the ‘TRUE’ country music artists, I held back the vomit and continued watching. If there is anyone out there who thinks that Miss Swift can sing, then they are just ‘tone-deaf’ IDIOTS! I think she is a joke and is actually bad for today’s country music scene. She IS sending a multitude of false hopes to the young ladies who are wanting to follow in her footsteps. It’s a tough business to get into and even harder to be successful in. I think she should keep her little A** in an office somewhere and focus on writing songs for people who can actually sing. If, or I should say when, she comes back to do another performance, I’ll sit down and read a book that is boring. She is by far the biggest joke to come to country music in history!

The reading a boring book comment was just a joke. I don’t know anyone who would read a book that was boring unless it was a required textbook. So I apologize for using the word ‘idiot’. Also, don’t even get me started on the ‘Female Vocalist of the Year’ award when there were other nominees who could sing better than Taylor if they had a sore throat!!!!!!!(and a sock in their mouths!)

Soon, she will no longer be a teenager, and she’s hinted at changing musical directions as she gets older. She has many pathways open to her, and which one she chooses to take will have a major impact on the direction of the music the follows her. In some ways, we are at her mercy.”
Us? At the mercy in some ways of someone who can’t sing “Happy Birthday” in tune? Give us a break! This travesty is unbelievable that I had to pinch myself many times to see if I was just dreaming. Or am I really awake? Must be the anti-histamines. Oh well…

If representing the genre means convincing everybody that Pop is Country and completely displacing Country listeners from Country radio, then yes, she’s doing a great job. I expect nothing less from the blood child of Shania Twain. There is nothing Country about her at all.
It’s not the teenagization of Country music but the obliteration of it. Just because her Pop tripe sells doesn’t mean it merits praise and awards. She’s only seen as genuinely nice by her parasitic fans and fools who believe in her act.

It’s because T. Swizzle is the little princess of the universe and the darling in everybody’s hearts. Everything that she does has to be praised.
The industry is in shambles because of this way of thinking. She’s just an extremely overrated songwriter who just recycles her depthless material, can’t sing Happy Birthday in tune, can’t perform at all, and is extremely fake with her speeches and always answers questions (From the Pop world and the Country scene) in whatever way she feels will make herself look good.

kid rock sang the only country song of the night.
the rest is pure crap that country music is shoving down our throats saying “here, your gonna like this now”..sorry, but i know the difference between the good stuff and the crap.
In the words of the immortal Merle Haggard “it’s just bad rock and roll”
Does pop music not have room for these artists.
Im so glad Rascal Flatts didn’t win anything.
I want my hot chickin pickin country back !!
Thank you very much.
Booger !

Taylor Swift may be bringing folks to country, but she’s taking country out of country music.

sheesh people are harsh on taylor. granted, she did sorta drop the ball at the CMAs but I don’t know why people so adamantly hate her.
im a huge taylor fan, but i do acknowledge the insincerity when she feigns shock. i mean, i knew she was going to win. it was obvious. i think she knows but it’s part of her “im so humble” image.
i think taylor’s voice lends vulnerability to her songs, which works really well for her “boys don’t like me” stuff. but on the more powerful songs it usually falls a bit flat.
whatever i still love her!

I agree that pop music has been introduced to country music, but pop music is over influencing country music in the US..maybe other countries?? People that want to sing country should stick to country. Country music awards are Country music, not throwing chairs, not sliding on stripper poles, or not a contest of how little of clothing you can wear.
I wonder what the great people of country music have though of this..such as George, Reba, Vern, Patsy, Laretta, Jones, etc…
As entertainment, this is a bad example towards the youth. These young girls of country music should be the inspiration of our young girls…????

Yes, Reba. Certainly she would never wear a dress so low people are still talking about it.

And I think Glen Campbell would agree that young girls should only follow Tanya Tucker’s example.
