2007 ACM Awards Live Blog
Welcome to the first live blog on The 9513! I’m going to try and blog for the full three hours of the ACM awards show tonight…depending on how exciting things are. Kevin over at Country Universe is a seasoned professional when it comes to live blogging, so hop on over to his blog to get a different point of view.

7:00 Kenny Chesney kicks the show off with “Beer In Mexico,” not an entirely exciting opening to the show, but it could be worse.
7:04 Shania Twain just took the stage to introduce Reba. Shania doesn’t look like she’s aged a day. My girlfriend says Reba looks freakin’ awesome.
7:07 The crowd went went wild when Reba introduced George Strait as well as Rascal Flatts. Just goes to show the varied tastes of country music fans. BTW, don’t let anyone ever tell you that this live blogging stuff is easy.
7:08 Reba’s jokes are a little cheesy, but she’s probably not offending anyone in the process.
7:10 “Give It Away” takes the cake for the ACM Song of the Year, congrats George Strait! Bill Anderson took the stage with Strait to accept the award and made a quip that he was old enough to be Carie Underwood’s grandfather. I think I remember reading the same joke in a few articles leading up to the ACM Awards, still very true though.
7:13 Professional rider Justin McBride came out to introduce Miranda Lambert. She’s performing “Famous In a Small Town” and is setting the bar pretty high for those taking the stage after her. I’m actually surprised at how good she sounds live. Dude in the background has a nice mohawk goin’ on.
7:21 Martina McBride is performing “Anyway.” Is it just me, or does she looks a lot like Katie Couric? This isn’t my favorite song, but wow does she have some vocal chords on her.
7:26 Martina announces the award for Album of the Year, and the winner is Some Hearts by Carrie Underwood. I’m 50% on predictions so far.
7:29 Commercial Break – Unfortunately we don’t have any sponsors at The 9513 or I’d take the time to plug them here. If anyone out there is reading be sure and leave a comment.
7:33 Reba says that in ACM Awards’ fight against global warming, Toby Keith is back stage surrounded by two ice cold kegs of beer. Nice contribution ;)
7:34 Josh Turner is performing “Would You Go With Me.” My girlfriend is beginning to be attention-starved, she thinks Turner is singing to her. I think that’s my subliminal cue to put the computer down…
7:39 It still baffles me that Craig Morgan is up for the New Male Vocalist award. It doesn’t matter though, Rodney Atkins took the award. I think he’s even sporting a new hat, too.
7:45 So far the performances tonight have been much better than the ones at the CMT Music Awards. Granted the the ACMs have more time, but they picked some nice artists to represent country music to the television audience. Right now George Strait is singing “Wrapped” as his steel guitar player is tearing it up.
7:50 Little Big Town takes the cake for Top New Duo/Vocal Group. All the members seem to be genuinely excited to have won.
7:58 Reba gives a shout out to Okies and introduces Carrie Underwood. Underwood is performing “Wasted.” Her outfit looks a lot more casual than her CMT Award attire. She added a nice wink to the end of the song.
8:02 One hour in and I’m still holding up. Taylor Swift is up to perform “Tim McGraw.” Her introducer claims that Swift and McGraw have never met until tonight. Swift is going solo with her guitar, quite impressive.
8:04 The cheese factor just shot up tenfold, Swift is now singing directly to McGraw and Faith Hill and she just gave them both a hug. McGraw looks a little uncomfortable. Reba saves the moment by hinting that she wouldn’t mind it if some teenage boy wanted to pen a song titled “Reba McEntire.”
8:06 Reba gave a shout out to the armed forces, which got a standing ovation from the audience. Pure class.
8:08 Rascal Flatts are singing some song I haven’t heard before. About the only songs I’ve heard are the ones they have on the radio, but this one isn’t much better. They’ve got a picture montage in the background in tribute to those lost at Virginia Tech.
8:15 Still looking subdued, but classy, Underwood is back to present Top New Female Vocalist. And the winner is…Miranda Lambert! Matt was the only one to get this right. Lambert is who I wanted to win, but thought Swift’s success from “Tim McGraw” would propel her to the top. Miranda Lambert read her acceptance speech from paper.
8:17 Brad Paisley is performing his latest single, “Ticks.” It’s nice to see that some people don’t have to take themselves too seriously. There might be something wrong with the sound equipment, his vocals are almost being drowned out by the instrumentation. It gives it a muddy sound. The crowd seemed to love the song.
8:26 Dr. Phil is in the house to introduce Toby Keith who is performing “High Maintenance Woman.” There appears to be some more sound problems at the beginning of the song that’s causing everything to fall flat. I don’t understand what the bikini clad construction women have to do with the song.
8:31 Vince Gill is presenting the Home Depot Humanitarian Award. The recipients are Brooks & Dunn.
8:32 I’m really not trying to make the awards show sound so boring, but there’s just not very much excitement and we still have half a show left.
8:34 Muzik Mafia has a strong showing on the show with Gretchen Wilson and Cowboy Troy giving a shout out to John Anderson and a follow up performance from Big & Rich joined by John Legend. Despite all the bad things people say about Big & Rich I think this is a pretty nice song.
8:42 Little Big Town is on stage struttin’ their stuff. All this exposure should help garner them a few more fans. I think it’s time to present another award though, it’s been an hour and forty-five minutes and only five awards have been doled out.
8:46 Rodney Atkins, still sporting his trademark ball cap, is performing. The girlfriend says it sucks…I might have to concur, even though we both like Atkins as an artist.
8:49 Terri Clark is looking pretty orange as her and Darius Rucker present Single of the Year to George Strait for “Give It Away.” Strait accepts the award this time and acts like a man whose accepted many awards before this one.
8:51 The sound still sounds horrible on Jason Aldean’s “Johnny Cash.” And that title is still a gratuitous use of Cash’s name. Aldean is screaming and the vocals are still barely getting out.
8:59 The Flatts guys aren’t even close to being funny as they introduce Reba and Kelly Clarkson for their duet. Call me silly, but I think Reba’s totally outperforming Clarkson.
9:05 Eddie Montgomery, Troy Gentry, and some tall chick present Male Vocalist of the Year to Brad Paisley. I’m really sucking it up on these predictions as Matt takes another category.
9:11 Brooks & Dunn are performing “Hillbilly Deluxe.” Not my favorite of theirs, but at least it’s not “Play Something Country.”
9:15 Top Vocal Group is presented by a chuckling Blake Shelton and Joe Nichols. And the trophy is sarcastically presented to Rascal Flatts. Surprise.
9:18 You know it’s a boring show when the commenters start asking “Who would win in a fight between Kenny Chesney and Terri Clark” and the unanimous decision is Terri Clark.
9:19 Faith Hill is singing her new single. The girlfriend is bored. She also says that Faith Hill has nicely shaved underarms…these are the things that women notice.
9:28 Sugarland is busting out the island twang with a conveyor belt going across the stage. This is the kind of performance to have towards the end of the show to keep the audience from falling asleep. I’ve never been big on the Sugarland bandwagon, but after Nettles’ CMT Music Award performance I’ve been converted a little. She’s got a pleasant voice and amazing control.
9:32 Back to the awards, this time for Top Vocal Duo. Brooks & Dunn wins it. I was hoping for an upset. BTW, didn’t Sara Evans look like she didn’t get enough sleep or something?
9:39 The show jumps directly into a Tim McGraw performance after the commercial break. I don’t think I’ve heard this song before, did they say it was a new one? The crowd ate it up.
9:45 Top Female Vocalist goes to (drum roll) Carrie Underwood. Wow, who guessed that one? ;) She’s still giving shout outs to American Idol.
9:51 Mr. Eclectic himself, Vince Gill takes the stage to get the crowd pumped up. The dude bleeds talent.
9:56 Shania is back to present Entertainer of the Year. Kenny Chesney wins. The only reason I picked him was because I felt like this is the only thing he lives for.

I’d have put “Give It Away” behind “If You’re Going Through Hell” in terms of “should win,” but it’s more deserving than “Before He Cheats” in the song of the year category. My prediction was wrong, but I’m pleasantly surprised.
May 15, 2007 at 6:43 pm
I think that was probably a pleasant surprise for most other people as well. I’m glad that Strait is walking away with some hardware after being nominated for eight categories.
May 15, 2007 at 7:05 pm
I think that means Strait is going to win male vox as well…
May 15, 2007 at 7:13 pm
I hope so…if only because that’s who I picked ;)
May 15, 2007 at 7:24 pm
Ugg….Matt, I hate you! How do you give a “Top New…” award to an artist with ZERO radio support?!?! Good call, tho ;-)
May 15, 2007 at 7:29 pm
Uh….did Toby Keith suddenly morph into Dwight Yoakum?! What is up with that hat…?
May 15, 2007 at 7:30 pm
I think he’s had a hat like that for a while. I even saw his own brand of them for sale at Cracker Barrel before.
May 15, 2007 at 7:32 pm
Bordy, it was six inches below his eyes! :::rolls eyes:::
May 15, 2007 at 7:35 pm
Kill me.
May 15, 2007 at 7:36 pm
Why is John Legend on stage with Big & Rich? Really, is there ANY point to that whatsoever? Am I missing something?
May 15, 2007 at 7:39 pm
I think the real question is why is Big and Stupid onstage? And could there be a better song to take the place of Ambian?
May 15, 2007 at 7:39 pm
I’d have given much more serious consideration to Taylor Swift if her second single hadn’t bombed at radio. Add in Kerosene going platinum and all the hype surrounding the Crazy Ex Girlfriend release and it seemed like cant-miss to me.
May 15, 2007 at 7:42 pm
Where are the Dixie Chicks?
May 15, 2007 at 7:43 pm
Little Big Town = The Eagles lite
May 15, 2007 at 7:44 pm
@ Baron: HAHAHAHA. Good one. C’mon. It took country music 7 years to forgive LeAnn Rimes for saying she wasn’t “some little girl singing country songs.” I think the Chicks have a bit more time to serve still.
May 15, 2007 at 7:45 pm
I think the Chicks broke out and took the wardens sons with ‘em.
May 15, 2007 at 7:46 pm
Waylon wouldn’t piss on a one of these cheese-dicks is they were on fire and holding his tele.
May 15, 2007 at 7:48 pm
HOOTIE AND THE BLOWFISH??!!
May 15, 2007 at 7:49 pm
George Strait covered the Red Hot Chili Peppers?
May 15, 2007 at 7:51 pm
This show just gets weirder and weirder…
May 15, 2007 at 7:52 pm
And I think Rascal Flatts should win for most hair product.
May 15, 2007 at 7:52 pm
It sucks AND blows.
May 15, 2007 at 7:53 pm
Where’s Hank III and a flame-thrower when you need him?
May 15, 2007 at 7:55 pm
You guys are better at live commenting than I am at live blogging.
May 15, 2007 at 7:56 pm
It’s easy when the songs all sound the same.
May 15, 2007 at 7:58 pm
I hope Reba and Kelly mud wrestle. That’s the only thing that will make that good.
May 15, 2007 at 7:59 pm
Ok, this time the Strait award was definitely not deserved. There’s absolutely no reason why “Before He Cheats” shouldn’t have blown every other single out of the water in that category. At least they didn’t give it to some pandering piece of crap, but Carrie really got jobbed there.
May 15, 2007 at 8:00 pm
Stait may not have had the better song but he’s by far a better artist…give it to the talent and not the flavor the the week.
May 15, 2007 at 8:01 pm
Actually, it’s not the sound that’s horrible, it’s the so-called “singers.” Make some of these wannabes try and sing without their pitch correctors and ProTools – it’s not pretty
May 15, 2007 at 8:01 pm
When is the mud coming?
May 15, 2007 at 8:02 pm
Where’s Miranda Lambert to kick all thier cracker asses (sorry Troy, Legend and Hootie.)
May 15, 2007 at 8:03 pm
Where’s Dolly to beat up Reba?
May 15, 2007 at 8:03 pm
You know, this would have been awesome if Kelly wasn’t up there. She (Kelly) doesn’t look right at all, and doesn’t sound like herself.
May 15, 2007 at 8:03 pm
Whay is Kelly warbeling dramtically in the background?
May 15, 2007 at 8:04 pm
If buy awesome you mean just above fingers on a blackboard then yees, it would have been.
May 15, 2007 at 8:05 pm
Kenny Chesney is a girl…and Toby is his date.
May 15, 2007 at 8:05 pm
Matt’s kicking our asses…
May 15, 2007 at 8:06 pm
props for Brad. I like that shirt.
May 15, 2007 at 8:07 pm
Does Matt get a date with Kenny of he wins?
May 15, 2007 at 8:07 pm
That is a pretty sweet shirt.
May 15, 2007 at 8:09 pm
I’m missing basketball for this?
May 15, 2007 at 8:10 pm
Warriors are the only exciting team tonight and they don’t play for another 20 minutes. Although it does look like Chicago is looking pretty strong tonight.
May 15, 2007 at 8:11 pm
and Reba and a punchline…
May 15, 2007 at 8:11 pm
it’s Hall and Oates!
May 15, 2007 at 8:13 pm
Hey “Kix” Brooks, Marty Stuart called and wants his hair back.
May 15, 2007 at 8:15 pm
why aren’t there any beer bottle being thrown…punk ass crowd.
May 15, 2007 at 8:15 pm
Diamand Rio – is that a stripper?
May 15, 2007 at 8:16 pm
If Kenny Chesney and Terri Clark were to fight, who would win?
May 15, 2007 at 8:17 pm
Rascal Flattes – brought to you by Massengale. If there was a god you’d all be struck down NOW.
May 15, 2007 at 8:17 pm
Terri Clark…duh.
May 15, 2007 at 8:17 pm
Terri Clark, no contest.
May 15, 2007 at 8:18 pm
Reba’s sooooo high right now.
May 15, 2007 at 8:19 pm
a parade of caca.
May 15, 2007 at 8:19 pm
If the Rascal Flatts’ lead singer’s hair and Kix Brooks’ hair were to fight, which would win?
May 15, 2007 at 8:20 pm
we all would.
May 15, 2007 at 8:21 pm
the bored girlfriend above is on to something.
May 15, 2007 at 8:22 pm
Faith sound like crap.
May 15, 2007 at 8:22 pm
Faith may not be 100% country, but DAMN she looks good, and she sounds great.
May 15, 2007 at 8:23 pm
Crap? I think you’re being too hard on Faith… that was pretty good.
May 15, 2007 at 8:23 pm
I’m missing Boston Public for this?
May 15, 2007 at 8:23 pm
Oooh! I just got a call from a telemarketer. Kinda broke up the mind-numbing boredom…
May 15, 2007 at 8:23 pm
not to me…sounded thin and strained.
May 15, 2007 at 8:24 pm
Ann you’re my kind of gal!
May 15, 2007 at 8:24 pm
She sounded good, but I think the performance was a little bit boring after sitting here for a little longer than 2 hours. I’ll give it another listen when it comes out on an album.
May 15, 2007 at 8:24 pm
My prediction for entertainer of the year – someone that’s not!
May 15, 2007 at 8:25 pm
Faith was mad that Carrie stold her outfit.
May 15, 2007 at 8:26 pm
The girlfriend thinks the trophies look like vaginas.
May 15, 2007 at 8:26 pm
why not…most that get them are.
May 15, 2007 at 8:26 pm
It’s difficult to make the live sounds transfer over TV. All of them are going to sound less than perfect, and it isn’t really fair to hold them to standard which is impossible to meet given the medium.
May 15, 2007 at 8:29 pm
I like the chick from Sugarland..now SHE can sing.
May 15, 2007 at 8:30 pm
extra points to SL for a chick bass player.
May 15, 2007 at 8:33 pm
Sugarland is AWESOME. But I really didn’t get the arm thing…
But seriously Jennifer is incredible. I will now extend my open invitation for marrige.
May 15, 2007 at 8:33 pm
I have a friend who is a studio big shot in Nashville. He says the number of country “artists” who can actually sing live without any “assistance” can be counted on one hand.
May 15, 2007 at 8:34 pm
and the mediocrity continues….
May 15, 2007 at 8:39 pm
Brooks and Dunn? Wow, they really had a nothing year. I still haven’t figured out why they’re such industry darlings. The king of smash hits that you’ve already forgotten by the next week.
May 15, 2007 at 8:39 pm
Ann, would Jennifer Nettles be one of those fingers?
May 15, 2007 at 8:40 pm
Sara Evans is still trying to get over her failed family values.
May 15, 2007 at 8:41 pm
Matt, Brooks and Dunn have party photos of a LOT of people in Nashville.
May 15, 2007 at 8:42 pm
Country music should NEVER have a string section.
May 15, 2007 at 8:42 pm
Haha.
May 15, 2007 at 8:43 pm
What if the string section is the Cherokee Cowboys?
May 15, 2007 at 8:44 pm
That was VERY well done, IMO. Maybe the best I’ve ever heard Tim McGraw sound on a live show. He’s not the best singer, and I think that must have been difficult for him. Kudos.
May 15, 2007 at 8:44 pm
Baron, what about Ray Price…didn’t he have a string section?
May 15, 2007 at 8:44 pm
it pisses me off when soldiers are used as props!
May 15, 2007 at 8:45 pm
Brody, his lesser work did.
May 15, 2007 at 8:45 pm
MIRANDA!!!
May 15, 2007 at 8:47 pm
Did Faith yell “What?!!!”
May 15, 2007 at 8:48 pm
These people thank god more than at a Rap awards program. You think god gives a spit about you little career?
May 15, 2007 at 8:48 pm
You’re way off base, Baron. Ray’s rendition of “For The Good Times” belongs in any discussion of the greatest country song of all time.
May 15, 2007 at 8:49 pm
I agree that soliders shouldn’t be used as props, but let’s be fair — that was a respectful song.
May 15, 2007 at 8:50 pm
Jim, true so let the song send the message.
May 15, 2007 at 8:51 pm
Reba is NOT funny. She’s a bitch.
May 15, 2007 at 8:51 pm
Okay, Vince Gill is THE MAN!
May 15, 2007 at 8:53 pm
What about a horn section in a country song?
May 15, 2007 at 8:54 pm
If Lyle can do it Vince sure can.
May 15, 2007 at 8:54 pm
Vince Gill’s songs are so non-descript at this point…he’s great, but I feel like he’s having a problem with the “so what” factor…
May 15, 2007 at 8:55 pm
Look he can actually play an instrument!!!!
May 15, 2007 at 8:55 pm
God, this is so much better than last year’s CMA Awards. I was at that three hour snoozefest.
May 15, 2007 at 8:56 pm
Music video and vocal event are not on-camera this year?
May 15, 2007 at 8:56 pm
Matt, it’s been WORSE?
May 15, 2007 at 8:57 pm
Kenny dressed for the occasion. He’s got sleeves.
May 15, 2007 at 8:58 pm
Seriously, people were sleeping around me at the CMA Awards. It was terrible.
May 15, 2007 at 8:58 pm
How did Chris Young get nominated when none of his songs got airplay? What about Trent Tomlinson or someone else…apparently they get desperate with the “new comer” categories as they picked folks who have had record deals for several years.
Glad to see George get Song & Single of the Year…awesome to see that country legend Bill Anderson still up there getting awards.
Sorry, I’m so over Carrie Underwood. I don’t think we’ll hear her 10-15 years from now.
What was the point of getting Shania off her island to come and speak for a few seconds? Oh wait, she comes back at the end?
If Toby Keith wants industry to take him serious, then quit doing amusing songs.
Josh Turner – swoon – too bad he didn’t win. He has had a lot of press being on NBC, CBS, and all the articles on him and Ralph Stanley for Me & God. By the way Baron and Brady, Brooks and Dunn won Collaboration of the Year. :( I was pulling for Josh and Ralph.
Anyone notice that Jessica of the Wreckers stole Taylor Swift’s dress that she wore for her Grand Ole Opry Debut?
Craig Morgan – LOSE the jacket and fire your stylist!
Sugarland…I always liked their sound and both albums are great to listen to while driving into work. We just saw Little Big Town in concert not long ago and they were just perfect with their vocals. I’m glad they won tonight.
Now, where is Shooter Jennings??? Bring the O Back in Country!
Second year Kenny Chesney gets cut short for his speech…what a riot!
May 15, 2007 at 8:58 pm
Hate to say it, but the ACM got the big one wrong. Rascal Flatts deserved Entertainer this year.
May 15, 2007 at 8:59 pm
Shoot, I WORKED the CMT awards last year. Jewel was sleeping on the lap of Ty Murry…
May 15, 2007 at 9:01 pm
Matt, none of those dogs deserved it. Not a one….
May 15, 2007 at 9:01 pm
Jessica, you saved all that up for the end didn’t you? ;)
May 15, 2007 at 9:02 pm
It’s been fun, boys and girls! thanks for hanging out!
May 15, 2007 at 9:03 pm
now it’s time for b-ball!!!!
May 15, 2007 at 9:03 pm
You know it Baron…all that energy just had to burst out at the end. :-p
Actually, my internet was down until about 30 minutes ago and I’ve been catching up on things.
May 15, 2007 at 9:10 pm
And I’m out guys. Got to go jogging and get my daily workout in. I might do a follow up post tomorrow. BTW, congratulations Matt for kicking our butts.
May 16, 2007 at 7:53 am
hey, who’s the little fat girl singing lead vocals with rascal flatts?
May 16, 2007 at 4:48 pm
HA!
