12 Days of Christmas Giveaway: Christmas in the Modern West

The 9513’s 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway

It’s the fourth day of Christmas and so far we’ve already given away a total of six great CDs. Yesterday, Paula_W scored a prize pack including Mary Chapin Carpenter’s Come Darkness, Come Light, Toby Keith’s A Classic Christmas, and Ryan Beingham’s Mescalito.

Today, we’re adding in yet another cool prize (details below).

Before I tell you about that, however, I believe that I promised you some details about a little thing called ouur 12 Days of Christmas grand prize. You already know that it contains more than 12 items and that at least two of those items are signed by the artists. And now you also know that it contains at least two awesome country music-related DVDs.

Is this sounding like something you want to win? If so, don’t forget to enter every day. You can stack up as many as eleven entries over the course of the contest. So don’t miss a day.

Day Four:

Having started in classics like Dances With Wolves and Field of Dreams, Kevin Costner is one of Hollywood’s biggest names–and now he’s trying his hand at country music. Together with his band Modern West, Costner released November’s Untold Truths, and we’re giving you a chance to pick up a copy as part of today’s prize pack.

L.A. Times Music Blog: “…[A] rootsy heartland rock effort. The reference points are what you’d expect in that corner of the musical world: Springsteen, Mellencamp, Seger and, most of all, Petty. Fortunately, while Costner commands the microphone, and strums rhythm guitar, he’s got a solid songwriter in John Coinman, an old musical pal and the primary creative influence here. Costner and other members of Modern West get co-writing credit on several tunes.”

Today’s winner will take home:

Toby Keith – A Classic Christmas
Mary Chapin Carpenter – Come Darkess, Come Light: Twelve Songs of Christmas
Ryan Bingham – Mescalito
Kevin Costner & Modern West – Untold Truths

Today’s Question:

To enter today’s giveaway, all you have to do is leave a comment to this article answering the following question:

Kevin Costner is (obviously) more well known for his acting than his singing. So since we’re talking about actors, what is your favorite Christmas/Holiday movie? Anyone who answers “It’s a Wonderful Life” will be automatically disqualified for being just too darn cliche. (Just kidding.)

Entries must be posted no later than 11:00 AM CST, December 18th. Good luck, and merry Christmas from The 9513.

I’m gonna say Christmas Vacation. It’s one of Chevy Chase’s best and a classic and tradition in my house.

“A Christmas Story.” And I never did shoot my eye out with a BB gun, although I accidentally put a bunch of holes in my aunt and uncle’s basement door with one.

A Christmas Story. It was Tradition for us to watch it every year as I was growing up. Elf is another great one. I have to say that I love It’s a Wonderful Life though.

I think I’m the only person in the world who’s not “in to” Christmas movies. We watched movies when I was a kid but never the same ones as a tradition or anything. So I’m going to pick a movie that takes place at Christmas (and during the winter) and was released on Christmas Day, 1963. Disney’s “The Sword in the Stone”. That’s is my favourite movie :)

I’m gonna have to go with “A Christmas Story”. There’s nothing greater than shooting your eye out with a Red Rider BB Gun, and getting away with saying the “F” word and blaming it on your friend. Did I mention the beautiful piece of art that adorned the living room? Nothing says classy holiday decor like a leg lamp. Ah, the memories :)

I like the ORIGINAL “Miracle On 34th Street”. A couple of new ones (or ones I’ve seen for the first time this year even if they’re ‘old’) that I like are “The Christmas Choir” and “Secret Santa”. And I’m kinda in to all the variations of “A Christmas Carol”. Some of those get pretty creative. Also “Finding John Christmas” is a really good story (saw it again last night).

I really love Reba’s ‘Secret of Giving’ movie. Glad Lifetime is showing it again this year. And even though it’s cheesy, I look forward to the LeAnn Rimes flick ‘Holiday In Your Heart’ each year too.

One of the movies that is a regular at my house at Christmas time(besides the obligatory Rudolph, Frosty & Charlie Brown) is Home Alone. The kids love the action and the sentiment.

My family is the epidemy (heck of I know how to spell) of National Lampoon’s vacation and no Christmas is complete without seeing the NL Christmas Vacation movie. So bad when everyone goes around quoting all the time.

Growing up, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was always on TBS or one of those stations. Oompa loompa doopity doo….

I also have to say that the National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and Home Alone. I know they are not the sappy, traditional Christmas movies like “Christmas Story,” “It’s A Wonderful Life,” and the countless others like them, but they are still classic, funny, and extremely entertaining.

“Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer” I knew when this came out for the first year, I thought they made it special for even my parents to enjoy. What is even more special are the special tunes in this claymation. “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas”, “Silver and Gold”, “I’m not just a Misfit”, “Island of Misfit Toys”. It was such a meaningful productions with lessons learned on still loving people who are different from yourself.

PS. Thanks and I haven’t received your e-mail yet.

“A Mom for Christmas” is a made for TV movie with Olivia Newton-John that my sister and I have watched every year since we were kids. We absolutely love that movie! Unfortunately, this year it wasn’t shown but I’m determined to find it somewhere on DVD for us to watch.

First place goes to the live action version of “A Christmas Carol” that features George C. Scott as Mr. Scrooge (although I like the Mr. Magoo version as well). Second place is the live action “Grinch” movie starring Jim Carrey from a few years back. I can just really relate to both of the lead characters in those films…..(lol)

No one put “Ernest Saves Christmas”?!? What kind of people are you?

I also enjoy the Muppet Christmas Carol, Santa Clause (w/ Tim Allen), and Elf.

However, my one guilty pleasure (as if those others aren’t) is “The Holiday”. My masculinity levels might have just taken a hit with that admission, but it really is an entertaining concept/story. Besides, I hear women like sensitive men… haha.

At the risk of being disqualified, it is a family tradition of mine to watch “It’s A Wonderful Life” every year on the day before Christmas Eve and something abuot all seven of us being together and curled up on the couches really makes the movie even more satisfying.

“A Charlie Brown Christmas,” but that’s not really a movie, just (!) a TV show. That said, it has to be “White Christmas” with Bing Crosby, Donald O’Connor, Rosemary Clooney and others. Sappy and definitely dated by today’s standards (the Santa Clause) but I just a sucker for those red satin gowns the girls wear in the finale.

No No Contest. It has to be “Christmas Vacation”. Not only one of the best Christmas movies of all time, but as well as one of the best comedies of all time. My favorite part is when Cousin Eddy is empptying the crapper in the middle of the street.

Since I can’t say It’s A Wonmderful Life I am going to have to say A Muppet’s Christmas Carol. At the risk of sounding like a Victorian Lit geek, it really is the only version that attepmpts to capture the poverty and grittines of Victorian England instead of having fat, well dressed urchins.

Miracle on 34th Street. I had to be in New York around Christmas a few years ago, and Macy’s on 34th Street reminded me of the movie. New York is wonderful at Christmas time, and I love the movie.
